Hi devs,

Part of the XE 2.1 roadmap is the improvement of the action bar.

Proposal can be viewed at:
http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActionMenuProposal

There are some icon usage variants:

   - no icons (just like Colibri)
   - Var1: partial icons
   - http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActionMenuVar1
   - Var2: full icons
   - http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActionMenuVar2

Ideas:

   - there could be an option to display or not the icons in the
   administration

I would like if you could give:

   1. some feedback about the proposals
   2. a preference between the icons variants (Var1, Var2)

Thanks,
Caty

Nice work, I like it a lot! I think getting the action icons closer to the
page content is great.

I like Var2: full icons better :-)

I really like the proposal, Caty!
How about displaying the menu for Page actions twice , on the top and on
the bottom of the page? This way, the need for scrolling could be
partially fixed. It will look strange on small contents ...
As a user, I would definitely distinguish visually better the actions on
using the menu with icons. BUT, the other proposal is much more elegant
and the step from a beginner user to an advanced user (regarding the
menu usage) is small. So,  the difference between those the two
proposals is the time needed to get used with the menu. My opinion is
that we either  display the icons, or we don't.

Since the look and feel is very important, and using icons in submenus
is a bit too much, I would choose the version without icons by default
and maybe an option in the XWiki Preferences section to display icons or
not.

Raluca.

Better link actions to content is a good idea.

Question: Should we have some way (optional) to navigate from one wiki
to another in a multiwiki setup. This shouldn't be setup by default
but maybe a config option. Then we could have a "Farm" element entry
before the wiki entry in the top action bar for this case. This could
potentially replace the "Ecosystem" panel for xwiki.org.

I have a small preference for var1 but I don't mind var2.

Thanks

A proposal for this kind of interaction can be found at
http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActionMenuNavigation

In order to provide two functions simultaneous (navigation + actions) the
menu element is separated into icon + name, each with it's own function.

Looks good. I can see only 2 main issues:

   - What happens with a lot of wikis or if one wants to hide some wikis?
Put a field with autosuggest instead of the list?
   - Tricky mouse interaction -> we're talking about small areas, might be
hard to aim correctly with the mouse -> maybe you could add ">>" between the
icon and the text to separate them a bit?

Guillaume

if you separate them too much they will look not look like a single item.

I like it a lot! The interaction is very simple. The fact that you can
select the space from the menu and you don't have to go on the
Dashboard  for that is a very big plus. And the fact that you can select
the current wiki from the menu is also a big improvement.
I would suggest to put a text on mouseover to explain what the icons
(for wiki and for space) mean, and what the arrows (select wiki and
select space) mean.

I don't think this could replace panels to create a navigation menu in
farms, I'm sure that even if we had this feature we would create
panels since a newcomer wouldn't see the navigation links. WDYT ?

I find the proposal very nice looking, my inner geek loves the
ingeniosity but I think it is overkill.
Raluca, do you really feel the need for a fast switch between spaces ?
I mean we use panels for that, let's take the default QuickLinks
panel, I think it's a big plus that it is customizable by admins and
that spaces like Panels or Scheduler doesn't appear in it.

If the idea is to get rid of panels in the future then big +1 :)
If the idea is to keep panels but have a new policy suggesting not to
use them as navigation menus, -0.

In the current proposal, the user doesn't have to do much effort if he
wants to add a page (for example) in a different space. If he uses a
panel, he will be force to load another page (Space.WebHome) and this
will add some extra time to the process duration.
About admin customization, yes, panels are a big plus. But what if the
list of spaces is long? Then, the panel is useless because having a huge
panel is not nice at all and the user will have to navigate to the
Dashboard or to some custom page.

We should keep the panels, but my opinion is that we should not use them
as general navigation menus.  The user  is able  to create panels and
customize them, so he can create alternatives to the main menu if that's
the case.
