Hi,

Recently a group I'm part of has been making Drupal web sites so I've had a
chance to check out how Drupal works.

One interesting feature in Drupal is that you can visit a page on your site
that tells you which modules have available updates, including urgent security
updates.

Is there interest in incorporating something like this in Plone?

Peace, community, justice,
- George

Do you mean something like our "add on" configlet which currently
only indicated that you should reinstall if you have a newer version
on disk than the one that has been installed then also showing that
there is a new release?

As long as we get the version matching right (potentially non-trivial)
i.e., you don't want to suggest an update that won't work in the site
at hand that might be a good idea indeed.

Yes!

Are you interested in making it happen?  This would be a great feature
to work on for Plone 5.

Unfortunately my MacBook met a tragic fate about a year and a half ago so I
haven't been able to do much development work =). I think something like this
could be fairly simple though, so I'd be willing to give it a crack.

My main question though is if the infrastructure is in place on
http://plone.org. People have talked about letting Plone sites ping to Plone
central different information; this is the other way around, where there would
need to be some way for plone.org (or some site) to respond with information
about what versions of products are available.

Raphael: In terms of making sure different versions are compatible, I'd suggest
giving alerts for:
  * Updates for Plone core
  * Updates for add-ons that are compatible for the installed version of Plone core
  * Critical security updates
And even then to say:
  * Before updating an add-on, please check to see if the newer version will be
compatible with the versions of other add-ons you have.

That way, it does a brief check on compatibility with Plone core, but otherwise
tells the user to proceed at their own risk.

Peace, community, justice,
