Prince's Rainforest Project (PRP) Second Life Concert for Schools

On Monday 9th November, Australian singer/songwriter Luc Floreani is hosting a Rainforest SOS concert in the weird and wonderful virtual world of Second Life.

This event is in support of the Prince's Rainforest Project (PRP) and the Prince's Rainforest Project For Schools to raise awareness about the importance of rainforests.

Date and Time
There are 2 concerts: an Australian concert at 4:00am-4:45am SLT (12 noon-12.45pm UK), and a US concert at 9:00am-9:45am SLT (5-5.45pm UK). In fact, there will be a continuous concert from 4am-10am SLT (12 noon to 6pm UK), with other artists from around the world taking part between Luc’s gigs.

Luc will perform supported by rap & dance performers from Respond Academy in London, a youth services programme. Features is the song, Breath
You can listen to Breathe here: http://schools.rainforestsos.org/free-resources/rainforest-multimedia/music#breathe.

All are welcome and we hope you will join in. Why not join the concert as a frog, The Prince’s Rainforests Project’s rainforest ambassador? The best frog avatars will be featured in the PRP schools site gallery and our featured news section.
Want to come to the concert? Here’s what to do:
If you’re watching the concert from a school then please check that the Second Life website works for you before the event. School firewalls can be tricky and you may need the help of your IT specialist and John Mahon, the concert organizer.

How to register:

1. As an existing Second Life account holder
Teachers who already use Second Life with their students need to register through their account at www.secondlife.com. When you have your avatar name, send an email to concert organiser John Mahon at [hidden email] This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with PRP Concert in the message header. In the body of email give your real name and Second Life avatar name. Details on how to attend will be sent to you.

2. As a new Second Life account holder
If you need to create an account and it is your first time using Second Life in your school, please ask your IT specialist for help and email the concert organiser John Mahon at [hidden email] This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , with PRP Concert in the message header.

You will need to download Second Life from www.secondlife.com and create an account. When asked if you wish to join a Community, chose “DUBLIN”. This will enable Luc and John to greet you with more details of the concert when you first log in.

As you may know Second Life can only be used by people who are 18 years or older. However, the concert is being held in a dedicated area of the site that can be used safely by teachers.

Any children who take part will have to have a responsible adult who has logged on. It is an invitation-only event and will only be accessible to other Second Life users who have registered to attend.

The concert can be viewed on school whiteboards.

Audience Participation
We are inviting children to sing along to the first half of Luc’s song “Breathe”, with Luc singing the finale.

You can listen to Breathe here. You can also download a free ringtone of Breathe by texting PRP to 81205.

And there are other rainforest music ideas and resources for schools available in Lesson Ideas and Rainforest Multimedia.

BACKGROUND
http://www.rainforestsos.org/ - Prince's Rainforest Project (PRP)

The Prince of Wales set up The Prince’s Rainforests Project in October 2007 to recognise:

1. the role played by the forests in both promoting and mitigating climate change and
2. the acute pressure that is being put on the forests in the search for land to grow beef, soya and palm oil as worldwide demand rises and commodity prices soar. There is a growing awareness of the need to protect and value the world’s rainforests, their people, and their resources and it is into this space that The Prince of Wales has stepped.

As His Royal Highness said: "The task is to review, develop and propose practical mechanisms that acknowledge the true value of the eco-system services provided by the world’s remaining rainforests. These solutions need to provide credible incentives to host nations, and to local communities, and must out-compete the drivers of rainforest destruction.” The Prince’s Rainforests Project works with governments, business, NGOs and individuals to increase global recognition of the contribution of tropical deforestation to climate change and to find ways to make the rainforests worth more alive than dead.

Prince's Rainforest Project For Schools

The education sector has a vital role to play in raising awareness about the importance of rainforests in stopping climate change. To support schools in this role, The Prince’s Rainforests Project (PRP) has created this Schools website.
