I've tried cutting & pasting the News and Events folders into a
sub-folder of the site root. But every time I try I get his error:

"Disallowed to paste item(s)."

Um, OK. Why? Is this not possible?

(I'd like to move the existing objects rather than creating equivalent
new collections because the News & Events portlets link to the
existing objects. The fact that you ended up in the root would be
visible in the Navigation portlet.)

News and Evens are Large Plone Folders. Creation of Large folder is not
allowed by default (it is allowed explicitly during portal creation
phase). Go to plone control panel/Types/ select Large folder  and check
"Globally allowed" checkbox. Try to repeat your cut/paste operation
afterwards. You can switch "Globally allowed" off then.
