Pootle buildout/recipe?

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

Hi everyone,

If you read Alex's last post, you would have seen a python-based i18n getText tool called Pootle (http://translate.sourceforge.net/) mentioned.  It allows translations of po files through-the-web.

I recently started using it for a non-Plone project and instantly thought how it would be useful for Plone translations too - but the install experience on it is _terrible_.

I was wondering if:
1) Anyone else out there uses it
2) If anyone wanted to work with me to make a buildout (or recipe?) for it so it can be used for Plone projects (and others) with the same ease as installing Plone is these days.

If I can get some guidance on how to go about it - I can do the time-consuming work of putting it together and testing it.

Cheers,

Duane

Hi,

What about http://transifex.org/ ? It seems it do the same as Pootle.
It's used by fedora https://translate.fedoraproject.org/tx/
Anyone has tested it?

It will be good to have statistics for Plone translations indeed. I
don't really have time to test Pootle, Silme or Transifex.
If anyone want to install one of those somewhere for testing, please do so.

Cheers

Hallo Jean

Glad to hear people are looking into Pootle for Plone. Virtaal is a
desktop translation tool that translators might be interested in for
offline translation. It can complement Pootle, as users can translate
offline and upload easily. Of course, it can work with any translation
files, not just from Pootle.

To compare to Transifex: Transifex is used at Fedora for managing
translation uploads. I'm not sure if you are able to download files from
there, but you might be able to. I think it shows some statistics as
well.

I think I would best describe Silme as a new format manipulation API
with a specific focus on Mozilla file formats. Last time I checked the
support for PO was in very early phases.

To contrast: Pootle is a complete web application, showing detailed
statistics including word-based statistics, which gives a better
indication of the amount of work left. You can group files in goals, and
you can look at error statistics for the language. Powerful searching is
also available.

Another big difference, is that with Pootle you can translate online. It
also provides help with terminology, and exposes the comments from the
developers or other translators. You can also view translations from
another language while translating.

The Translate Toolkit is the underlying power of both Pootle and Virtaal
(and many other tools). It is a toolset with commandline utilities, but
also a powerful python API for manipulating translation files. This
might be relevant to the Plone community. Last time I checked, Plone was
still using non-standard PO files with the English text in the comments
and only an identifier in the msgid field. With the Translate Toolkit it
should be easy to convert this for use in standard PO tools. Feel free
to pop into #pootle on irc.freenode.net to see if one of the developers
is available in case of any questions.

Pootle is quite easily installed on distributions with packaged versions
(Debian, Ubuntu, and some other non-official ones like Fedora). The
upcoming version should also install more easily and work under apache
with mod_python / mod_wsgi, etc.

Is anybody else using it? Oh, yes. Some of them are visible here:
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/live_servers

I hope that helps.
Friedel
