I deleted 66 spam messages from the ploneboard poi today — and ended up
closing it temporarily down as the spam posts kept coming in even as i
deleted.

Is this a common problem or a one-time issue?

Would it cause a major hassle for people to require logon to post
replies in poi?

I have had the same problem lately with two of the issues of the Poi
tracker itself:

http://dev.plone.org/plone.org/ticket/1304

I revoked the 'Poi: Add Response' permission from anonymous for those
two issues specifically and that has helped.

This might mean that fewer people will submit bug reports as they are
then required to create an account on plone.org.  (But when submitting
a new issue you need to fill in an email address anyway.)

But since it keeps spammers away this would be acceptable to me.

I am pondering making allowing anonymous additions configurable per
tracker: http://plone.org/products/poi/issues/214
