The Plone community invites all Plone and Python developers to join
the very first "Plone Tune-Up Rally" event on Friday afternoon, July 25th, 2008. "Plone Tune-Up Rally" is an event that happens every other Friday afternoon and aims at addressing tickets in the Plone issue tracker and advancing Plone in general. This Friday's event will be hosted by the good people at Six Feet Up —http://www.sixfeetup.com — and we encourage all developers in the Plone Community to participate and contribute as much as they want and can for a few hours each month. The hosts will be present from 2pm-6pm (14:00-18:00) EDT, but don't let that stop you if you are in a different time zone! The current lists of tickets that need some immediate attention are: - Tickets without owners: http://dev.plone.org/plone/report/6 - Tickets marked as being critical/blockers: http://dev.plone.org/plone/report/17 - Bugs specific to Internet Explorer: http://dev.plone.org/plone/report/20 - Tickets already assigned to you: https://dev.plone.org/plone/report/ 7! (if you already have some, that is ;) The "Plone Tune-Up Day" is a great opportunity for all to work together and discuss development tricks with influential Plonistas. Come on over to #plone-tuneup on irc.freenode.net this Friday and help pump up Plone! (If you want to use a web-based chat client, go to the Plone chat room page at http://plone.org/support/chat and enter "/j plone-tuneup" to join the tune-up room once you're logged in) Thanks, Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker COO and Co-Founder -- S i x F e e t U p , I n c . | "Nowhere to go but open source" Silicon Valley: +1 (650) 401-8579 x601 Midwest: +1 (317) 861-5948 x601 Toll-Free: 1-866-SIX-FEET mailto:gabrielle@... http://www.sixfeetup.com | Zope/Plone Custom Development ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Plone-Users mailing list Plone-Users@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/plone-users |

GHP: When we saw the "party like it's 2004" email, we had already been talking about dedicating some of our development time to advance Plone on some Friday afternoons. So we responded to Limi saying we were going to hold a first "Tune-Up" event today, and he helped announcing it. There really wasn't much discussion about it. > > please don't get me wrong here, but what warrants a widely posted > announcement on behalf of the "plone community", especially when there > seemed to be some agreement to do something like this two weeks before > the next packaging deadline and, more importantly, _not_ on weekends? GHP: Anybody is welcome to host/lead a "Tune-Up" event. We at Six Feet Up have time for this on some Friday afternoons. If you have time over the weekend or at any other time, please go ahead and schedule more "Tune-Ups". I think we all agree that the more events like this one, the better for Plone. > > > while i don't really mind if it's one or two weeks in advance, or even > one week and a weekend :), i think doing this on a friday is a really > bad idea. even more so if it's scheduled for afternoon in a u.s. > time. > this means friday night for europeans, so chances are very few of us > will be able to attend... :( GHP: It is going to be really hard for an international community of developers to agree on one timeframe. Some people need to take the lead and say "I'll be working on Plone on <insert date and time>" and this will help rally the troops. > > > i really would have liked to help in a coordinated effort and was > actually looking forward to reviving bug days, but like this there's > no > way i can make it and i suspect this this will also hold for more > people > over here. GHP: The "Plone Tune-Up Rally" concept is for all to share. Yeah, I made similar comments about timing etc, but I didn't want to block the energy behind this effort just because it didn't fit the discussed schedule. And it lead to quite a number of bugs getting fixed, so I think it was worth it, and a good inaugural new-style bug day. :) > while i don't really mind if it's one or two weeks in advance, or even > one week and a weekend :), i think doing this on a friday is a really > bad idea. even more so if it's scheduled for afternoon in a u.s. time. > this means friday night for europeans, so chances are very few of us > will be able to attend... :( I agree, I think it should be moved to be earlier in the week next time, and be a bit better timed with the releases. I wanted to see how the Six Feet Up crew did with as few road blocks as possible, and I think they did well. We can adjust the timing on the coming events. > i really would have liked to help in a coordinated effort and was > actually looking forward to reviving bug days, but like this there's no > way i can make it and i suspect this this will also hold for more people > over here. Consider this a beta test of a new bug day approach that doesn't have me as a bottleneck. :) The intention of this was two-fold: a) Test out a re-branding of "bug days" to something people are more excited about. Make it more about improvements, less about "fixing bugs" — even though it comes down to the same thing. b) Make it a known event that can be hosted by any team of volunteers, so I'm not the limiting factor. If anyone else wants to help out, let us know. I'm hoping we can count on SFU for the next couple of events, but ideally this should be hosted by more than one group of people over time. The important thing is that a lot of bugs got fixed, and people knew about the event — so I consider it a success. Let's try to time it a bit better for everyone next time — I agree that Friday isn't the best day for this, and we should try to time it two weeks before the continuing mantenance releases. Thanks to Gabrielle and Calvin and the Six Feet Up crew for helping out with this! -- Alexander Limi · http://limi.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Plone-Users mailing list Plone-Users@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/plone-users |

And it lead to quite a number of bugs getting fixed, so I think > it was worth it, and a good inaugural new-style bug day. :) fair enough, and i surely didn't want to sound too negative. i do appreciate the effort. but after the last not so successful attempts on doing bug days, i think we need to try to get as many people involved and also focus on just one regular event instead of potentially many (the name doesn't matter that much to me, btw). so if this is to be the "official" plone community effort —- and the announcement did indeed sound that way -- i think we should very soon find a schedule that suites as many developers as possible and then stick to it. moving things around and announcing follow-up event one by one, potentially with differing schedules, won't get us far... i know it's possible for me and other to host our own "tune-up rally" as gabrielle pointed out elsewhere, but imo this will only lead to scattered events with only a handful of people showing up (if at all) and the same outcome we've seen before, i.e. discontinued. perhaps it's only me, but i don't think the (active) community is big enough just yet to be able to have various events of this type. instead we should focus on one and try to make it work for more people. iow, let's continue the discussion we started and come to a conclusion... in that sense, here's another idea: if we are to have bi-weekly events, how about alternating their times to better suite the two main (sets of) time zones and perhaps also make them a bit longer so people from "the other side" can still join in? iow, let's fix the schedule and stick to it so everybody knows well in advance an can plan accordingly. sounds a bit lame, but afaics most of us are way too busy these days to be spontaneous... :) in addition, we should make an effort to find people to host these for say the next 3 months for a start... > I wanted to see how the Six > Feet Up crew did with as few road blocks as possible, and I think they did > well. i can see the point, but still think it would have been —- or let's say would be :) -- much better to have a coordinated effort instead of someone just trying out something in the middle of an ongoing discussion. like i said, i do appreciate gabrielle and calvin's efforts, but would have liked them to let at least briefly bring up and discuss their plans here before making an announcement (in the name of "the plone community"). cheers, andi -- zeidler it consulting - http://zitc.de/ - info@... friedelstraße 31 - 12047 berlin - telefon +49 30 25563779 pgp key at http://zitc.de/pgp - http://wwwkeys.de.pgp.net/ plone 3.1.3 released! -- http://plone.org/products/plone/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Plone-Users mailing list Plone-Users@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/plone-users |
