Peculiar bug with stereo tracks and only one channel

I have an odd problem with my project. I have two tracks that are both supposed to be stereo. One of them is only showing a single channel (not marked left or right) and the other shows both channels. If I select the track that only has one channel, the upper channel in the other track is also selected. It seems the stereo track with only one channel is latching onto the adjacent stereo track.

If I try to split the stereo track with only one channel Audacity crashes. I have attached a screenshot for those that it will help. Any ideas?

I'm using Audacity 1.3.8 on Windows XP.

Thanks,

Mat

Hi
looks to me you have got top track stereo the next track is left, right and
middle and the last track is mono. I would check your sources.

Hi,

Sorry,  I should have included a clearer screenshot. The problem tracks are the ones highlighted in the middle (both labelled Scene 5). I have selected the upper Scene 5 track and this has also selected the top channel of the lower Scene 5 track - I can't select the upper track independently.

The mono track at the bottom of the screenshot is fine and the track at the top is also OK. The problem tracks should be two stereo tracks (I recorded them myself and they definitely started out that way) but the upper one somehow has part of it missing. If you look closely, you'll see the bottom of it's window appears to be missing, like it's chopped off, whereas the other "Scene 5" track is complete. The missing bit of window is what makes me think it's a bug, but I could be wrong.

I have also at some point managed to move another track to sit underneath the chopped-off track and the chopped-off track then becomes joined to it. I'm having to be very careful with  the project to avoid wrecking the tracks that are currently ok.

Thanks,

Mat

Did the problem first start to occur while in the middle of editing, or right
after loading the saved project?  If after loading, was there a crash or
abnormal quit just before that project load?  Either way, I have no idea how
the project got to be this way, but based on the screenshot and description of
the problem I have a pretty good idea of what some of the internal program
data probably looks like, and the behavior and crashes you report make sense
given that.

It's going to be very difficult to work with this project as it is, so I suggest
that you export each of the working tracks individually to a .wav file, start a
new project, and import those tracks into it.  You should be able to export
everything but that stereo track that's missing one of its channels.  As for
that track... after all the other data is exported from the project you can
try to delete all the other tracks and see if you can export that one.  I'm
not sure it will work, though; you might have to re-record it.

The data for the other half of the track might be around somewhere, but I
don't know how to find it and recover from it if it is.  I'll forward this to
the developers' list.

After looking at some audacity project files, I think there's a chance I could
help you recover the broken stereo track.  You'll need to send me a couple
things:

1. The audacity project file (the file you click on to open the project --
should have the extension ".aup"; this doesn't contain any sound data itself.

2. A recursive listing of the project's data directory.  There should be a
folder alongside the project file that has the same name except with "_data" at
the end.  Open a command prompt and navigate to this directory (go to the
start menu and select "Run...".  At the resulting dialog box, type "cmd" and
hit enter.  You'll get a command prompt.  Check the address bar in the window
your project file is located in; type "cd", then a space, then this full
address into the command prompt and hit enter.  Then type "cd", a space, and
the name of the data directory, and then hit enter).  Once you're at the
command prompt and in the data directory, type "dir /s /b > ..\listing.txt".
Once the command is complete a file called listing.txt will appear alongside
your project file.  That is the second file I need.

None of this will send me your audio, just a description of where files are
located, so that I might be able to help you put it back together.  There is a
chance, however, that the data is lost forever.

Al,

I've noticed it a couple of times on the project I've been working on. I'm not entirely sure when it first appeared, but I have had a few crashes so it's quite possible it occurred after a crash. I also get the "missing data" warning when I load the project.

The problem tracks are less of an issue than the whole project, I got quite concerned about it last night after I posted so I just deleted them. I think I have an older saved version, but I don't mind recording it again anyway (it's just me talking). Sadly therefore I can't send you the info you're after in your other post, which I appreciate could have helped others. If the error occurs again I can do so though if you're interested.

I'm quite interesting in coding and so on, so would be interested to hear what you think has happened.

Thanks very much for the reply - I really appreciate the help.

Mat

Hi Bill,

As you'll see from my other post I've just deleted the problem tracks and it looks like maybe something else is afoot, but I'll give your idea a go should the problem repeat itself.

Thanks a lot,

Mat

OK.  Good to know you haven't lost anything critical.

Here is a basic explanation: Audacity keeps a list of all the tracks in a
project.  If you open an Audacity project file in a text editor (don't mess
with any important projects, of course) you will see it's just an XML file
describing what the tracks are.  The audio is stored in block files in the data
directory.  That gives a basic idea of the structure: the project contains
tracks, the most common type of track is a wave track, which contains clips,
and each clip is made up of a sequence of blocks.

A stereo track is actually represented as two separate tracks.  If you look at
the tag for each of the two tracks you'll see that the first one has the
"linked" attribute set to 1, and channel=0.  The second has linked=0 and
channel=1.  "Linked" means that the track is linked in stereo with the track
immediately following it; "channel" refers to right or left channel, 0 being
left.  Audacity's internal list of tracks while running is structured
similarly to this XML file.

It seems that somehow the second track in your stereo pair, representing the
right channel, disappeared.  How, I don't know.  But Audacity still thinks the
first one is "Linked".  That's why you observe it trying to link itself with
the left channel of whatever track you put after it.  There is a lot of code
that assumes that the track list is sensible, and when it isn't the broken
assumptions lead to unusual behavior and crashes.

Ah, that makes sense. I'll have a look for that should it happen again and post here if I find out anything worth sharing.

One of the developers that's been around longer than I have thinks the root
cause may have been a bug in 1.3.8 that's since been fixed.  So you might want
to grab the latest release.

Generally speaking, it's always best to use the latest release because
it will have the latest fixes. But I've been tracking Audacity bugs
since well before 1.3.8 and I cannot recall a report of what you
experienced before now. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened
before.

I think the bug the other developer has in mind was one where the left
track of a stereo pair would disappear if you reduced the size of the
window. That is indeed fixed, but I don't think it's anything to do with
what you experienced.

It's possible your issue was some other kind of view or redraw bug
that might have been resolvable by fitting vertically or expanding or
similar. But more likely I think that the project got corrupted, maybe
due to an earlier crash. But if so, I'd have thought the actual recovery
of the project might have been faulty.
