A group of disillusioned citizens who have been the victims of crime decide to organise and take the law into their own hands.

Disgruntled soldier Bryant (Sean Bean) back in London from Iraq and frustrated by lack of respect and the failure of the police to protect people from the street thugs and hardened crims, teams with misfit security guard Simon (Sean Harris), widowed barrister Cedric Munroe (Lennie James) and young bashing victims Sandy (Rupert Friend) and Danny (Gene Dekker) to form a vigilante gang. They're assisted by ex-Army, now detective Lewis (Bob Hoskins), who is on driving duties for high risk figures, such as Munroe, but is equally frustrated by the absence of tougher policing, and is ready to feed Bryant with all the varied scum who prey on the hapless, from pedophiles to junkies. But some of the gang start halving qualms about their actions.

Racho-macho vigilante action with a cockney accent, Outlaw is made to seem more important than it really is by the presence of Sean Bean and Bob Hoskins in key roles. The film offers easy entertainment action as a rag-tag bunch of characters join forces to take the law into their own hands when the law's hands are oiled or ineffective.

Tight scripting and a no nonsense story makes the film engaging without being demanding. Sean Bean delivers everything asked of him as the soldier who finds it hard to reconcile his service for England with England's law enforcement services. Bob Hoskins is also a disgruntled character, festering with resentment, ready to broil with rage at the scum who litter the streets.

Sean Harris is especially terrific as the cold bloodied, possibly psychotic security guard with a handy knowledge of hidden closed circuit cameras and a readiness to exact revenge when the rest of the gang seem reticent. Both Rupert Friend and Gene Dekker handle their roles well as bashing victims ready to hit back, and Lennie James makes a memorable Cedric Munroe, the barrister whose job earns him great grief. And if it seems unlikely that a barrister would join a vigilante gang ... remember that this is basically a wish fulfilment revenge movie and anything goes.
