Equal Pay for Women in SET
The 30th October is Equal Pay Day, a day of action lead by the Fawcett Society to draw attention to the fact that on average women’s full time mean hourly pay is 17.1% less than men’s. The 30th of October symbolically marks the last pay cheque that women receive in a year, since compared with men they work on average for about two months a year without pay. The UKRC supports this day of action since there is also a gap between women’s and men’s pay in SET occupations, and we encourage women in SET and SET organisations to support the Fawcett day of action.

Caroline Graham, with the help of UKRC, returns to her Career
After an 8 year break and with the support of the Scottish Resource Centre and UKRC, Caroline Graham has returned to her career in engineering. Caroline was working at the box office of her local theatre only 2 years ago and little suspected that she would ever be able to return to mechanical engineering research. Now working at Heriot-Watt University.
Caroline said ‘It’s been a great year and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of the Scottish and UK Resource Centres. I am back in engineering research and I plan to continue with lots of interesting projects. My life will never be the same again. Thank you’.
UKRC was pleased to help Caroline with training, networking and finance.

Athena Swan goes from Success to Success
The 2009 round of Athena SWAN awards attracted an unprecedented number of applications and a record 35 awards were made. This is a clear indication that, even in these harsh economic times, universities and their departments want to attract and promote female talent.
In excess of 25% eligible universities are now in possession of the renowned Charter – securing excellence in gender equality practice in higher education.
