Folks,

A few days ago we received a new application, GeoServer.

The incubation application is available at:

   http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/OSGEO+incubation+questionnaire

Andrea Aime and Jody Garnett are already on the incubation list, so feel
free to start asking any questions.

I personally don't see any problems with GeoServer proceeding into incubation
as soon as a we have a suitable mentor volunteer.  So also consider this
a request for a mentor volunteer.

Best regards,

It's great to see this application, knowing the commitment of the team behind it!

One minor question I have.. I'm curious if the GeoServer team has any thoughts or plans to change copyright to OSGeo.  The question comes up every few months, generally speaking, when I'm discussing OSGeo projects with others.  Any plan (short or long term) to change it or modify it at all?

Best wishes,
Tyler

We are enthusiastic  about finally having the application in (thanks
to Andrea for pulling it together).

We have no plans to change the copyright of GeoServer.

Where are we at with this - are we still looking for a mentor; or are
we waiting for a slot to open up?

I am putting together slides for osgeo and would like to know if I can
refer to the incubation process for GeoServer.

As far as I can tell there are a number of cool projects sitting in
the wings waiting for a volunteer?

Jody,

The hold up is getting an incubation mentor volunteer.  I think something
needs to be done to break this mentor logjam.  I am not sure what.

I am waiting on deegree before being available; they had good progress
in a recent "sprint" but am still closing down the final steps.

I wonder if we have enough projects now that we could remove
"incubating" projects from the main website as method of encouragement
to complete?

Perhaps one idea is to attach the problem at it's source. We need
people experienced with the incubation process - we could contact
projects that have previously graduated and see if those involved in
the process would be willing to step up.

Indeed if we had a tradition of going through the process once; and
then helping along the "next" project this committee would be a bit
more fluid.

Jody,

I see we have 65 subscribers to the incubator list, many of whom I
assume might be good mentor candidates.  I agree that representatives
of projects that have completed the process are the most likely mentor
candidates for new projects.

What reaching out do you propose beyond this on-list exchange?

One other thing I might suggest is that we could relax the rule that says
a person can only mentor one project at a time.

Best regards,

Well I sent a couple private emails asking :-)

Not sure how sustainable that is; but yes that is another approach.

Cheers,
Jody

Alright, Jody has corralled me into volunteering :)

The only possible issue is that I'm a previous contributor, though my
last commit to the project was in probably in 2004, maybe 2005. The
advantage is that I'm already quite familiar with the project.

So unless there are any objections, I will volunteer to mentor
Geoserver's incubation process.

Cheers,

Richard

Richard, thanks for volunteering, it will be excellent to see another
high profile project go through incubation.

Re being a previous contributor: There should be no problem there. A
precedent has already been set.
I mentored GeoTools through incubation, despite being a committer a few
years back, and also being a retired member of the Project Steering
Committee. I don't think it clouded my judgment, I still held the
geotools team accountable.

So now that we have a suitable volunteer (thanks Richard!); I can put
down a +1 for GeoServer incubation.
