Dear Posters,

Please be aware of a few items of network etiquette that will make your posts more enjoyable to your readers:

-  When quoting, please take a moment to edit down to just the essential point(s) to which your are replying.  It is very irritating to most readers to be forced to wade through a vast wasteland of material they have already read.

- Please do not use ALL CAPS (this is considered to be shouting at your reader).

- Please do not use outrageous fonts.  They're not funny.

- If you want to post something off topic, no problem.  Just start a new thread.  If it is way off the normal topics for the particular interest group, it is helpful to put "O.T." at the beginning of the subject line.

These are not rules (we don't have "rules" here), just common courtesy.

Thanks!

Hi, Joe,

              Good points!

One other matter I've never seen resolved is, should a reply be tacked on ABOVE or BELOW the original?

       Have fun,

            Roy.

Roy.

Forgive me for diving straight in on this one. :-)

I have had several bad encounters over this subject on other forums, because it would seem that everyone has a different idea on how it should be.

By convention, I always "top-post". That's with my reply above the original. That's so my reply gets seen without wading through an already seen message and the relevant parts of the previous message are underneath for reference only. That said, that's MY way of doing it.

If someone else wants to "bottom-post" I have no issue with that. I just read it and get on with my life. :-)

I also see folks (sorry Owen) intersperse their reply with points raised in the original message, sometimes changing text color. This too is OK, but can be slightly difficult with subsequent replies getting jumbled up. The different colors help, but that's only if the reader's email client is set to display them.

The only ones I object to are the single "me-toos" and a reply which is so obscure (usually with no reference message) that you can't work out what the reply is to. :-(

Joe has said that there are no rules here. I hope we can keep it that way and all live together with our different styles of posting.

The one thing I do want to emphasise is that if the subject changes, folks PLEASE change the subject line.

My tho'ts. I hope they're acceptable.

Regards,

Alan.

Hi, Alan,

Yes, I always post on top. It somehow feels natural to me, but I can see the other side... When a long thread develops, you have to do the "unnatural" thing of following it from the bottom up.

Of course, having raised the subject of "Netiquette", like most things on this modern planet, there's something about it on the web... LOTS of it in fact, e.g.

     Have fun,

          Roy.
