Welcome to castle Rock, Marine, a lovely place to live...if you don't mind selling your soul! Ed Harris and Max Von Sydw star in a dark and haunting tale based on the best selling Stephen King novel. Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Harris) has a devil of a problem: Suddendly all the residents of his sleepy little town are inexplicably lashing out at one another in outbursts of cruelty. There certainly appears to be no relatioship between these strange events and the opening of an unsusal antiques shop down the stret. However, business is booming and the shop's mysterious owner (Von Sydow) seems to have something for everyone...as long as they're willing to part with more than just their money.
Better than most Stephen King adaptations, mainly because an exceptionally strong cast adds substance to the facile storyline about a mysterious stranger, Leland Gaunt (von Sydow), who opens the antique shop of the title in Castle Rock, Maine, and, by tapping into the inhabitants' acquisitive desires, sets them at one another's throats. As Fraser C Heston has observed, there are no supernatural beings here - the only monster is avarice. Little more than an EC Comics-style morality tale about the greedy getting their comeuppance, but the director has a strong eye for visual detail and expansive composition.
The devil in disguise comes to a quiet, peaceful town and opens a store called Needful Things. The store has an item for everyone in town. All the devil asks for in return is a few dirty pranks. Little do they know, that they've sold their souls, and the pranks escalate to murder...
