Milo and Project Natal have been flying around the twitterverse since the day that video was released. And I believe AJ posted something on the SLED list not too long ago. But I agree, ground breaking and potentially game changing technology. And I personally had not anticipated the AI progress shown in that video at this stage...and then to have it be Microsoft, well, that really blew my mind.

Personally I'll believe it when I see it in the homes of consumers. A lot of companies, Microsoft included, are known for spoofing products in the past to generate hype. There was a time MS was presenting Windows XP to companies and instead of actually using WinXP they used NT and Windows Media Player to play an edited video of XP working properly in order to promote it. Yes they were caught doing that because the techs on hand forgot to turn off the projector when booting the demo machine to set it up for the presentation. To me its no different then the iPhone commercials which are mostly video edits to make the iPhone look faster then it really is in the real world.

I'm not trying to stomp on anyone's hopes here, just saying until this is released in the wilds of real homes so we can see how well it works is to take any of the promotion of it with a grain of salt.

Holding with tradition, E3 demos should be taken with a grain of salt.  Double for anything with Molyneux's name attached.

This does seem quite amazing.  I have been searching for information concerning speech recognition with SL or any virtual world for that matter, with no success at all, and along comes Mylo?  A grain of salt is right.  Any information concerning speech recognition in the VWs would be greatly appreciated.

Not entirely sure about Mylo eithe though the other MS demo was clearly labelled as a concept demo while the Mylo one wasn't afaik.

Never tried it but there is a MS-specific system called EVA at https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=196663. Mainly text2speech but advert suggests the opposite is possible as well -- I can imagine ways in which it might be done. Sadly the native SL voice is not accessible from the LSL scripting language.

Marc Rexen mentioned the IBM ViaVoice product. This seems to be moribund and no longer available from the IBM website although there was an accessibility project using it -- never saw any downloads from it though. Happy to be corrected on this!

I guess this is all relevant to tomorrow's Helen Keller Day. I'll be there for some of the day on the Supporte sim -- do drop by and say hello. :) There's a scripting competition among other things so I guess there may be new developments on show.

Helen Keller Day this Saturday

Just to reinforce what Jeremy has been saying. There’s a lot going on during Helen Keller Day in SL, including a keynote from Pathfinder Linden, a talk on teaching techniques for people with special needs and a Virtual Teaching Programs Panel. Check out the page below for more detail, much of it relevant to this list.

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Helen_Keller_Day

Note that the deadline for the prize-bearing contests, including the wiki, has been extended to 12 noon SLT 1st July. The contests themselves have a lot to offer/intrigue builders/scripters as well as resource gatherers and folk that like games. Some interesting freebies too.

I’m going to be using the Twitter hashtag #hkd3dw for Jeremy’s wiki so do tune into that if you can’t make it inworld. The wiki itself is at http://blinddeafawareness.pbworks.com/

Didn't the entire thing just seem massively massively pre-scripted?

It's far easier to handle speech recognition (or facial recognition, or body language recognition) if it's within nicely delineated boundaries, even if those boundaries are not obvious to observers.

So yeah, it may end up being a very impressive, very immersive simulation of "a boy on a swing" and basically very little else. Still impressive, but...yeah: it's Molyneux.

Considering voice recognition can be done with cell phones you might want to take a look at Google's Android OS as they have a few applications that use voice recognition such as Voice Search and Voice Dialer. Might be a tad easier to get at then VW's stuff.

Yes I agree and that's my point. Its very much easily scripted and easily spoofed. I doubt the actual product was in use though because its easier and cheaper to just setup a prop with some good video editing to simulate what its use in the perfect environment would be like if it works like they want it to. Especially when the primary goal at E3 is to generate hype for your products (showing of technology comes in 2nd or 3rd these days).

I couldn't bring myself to believe this one.  It seemed a little much, especially the "catching the ball" hype and seeing the reflection in the water of the person addressing him.  Possible?  Yes, but unlikely.  What I found much more compelling was the Xbox Natal videos.  Xbox is apparently coming out with Natal material (search on YouTube).  I think if they put the Xbox name behind it there had better be some truth behind the claim so I'm more prone to lean toward believing that one.

There are going to be some truly amazing "toys" available this Christmas (including the mind-control game where a helmet is worn and you can guide a ball through a hoop by brain waves).  I hope "Santa" brings ME some of these.  :)  Assuming the game can detect some brain waves.  Ahem...
