Servers do occasionally go off line, either for routine maintenance, a
forced restart by the owner, or a crash. If you have scripting skills,
you can write yourself an easy routine to check on the status of an
sim by calling llRequestSimulatorData("Your Sim's Name Goes
Here",DATA_SIM_STATUS). The result will be "up," "down," "starting,",
"stopping,", "crashed," or "unknown." I have that built into an
information panel at the ref desk on Info Island International so that
our library volunteers can answer when a patron asks what happened to
one of our sims.

No idea what causes it though I guess it's worth noting that adjacent sims are not necessarily located on the same server and it may well be that a problem on one presents in this fashion. In the case of the busy conference perhaps it was bandwidth issues.

Everything from the Chilbo Town Hall and West was gone. I could rotate and view the scene. As soon as I tried to fly toward the cliff, I was logged out. Subsequent attempts to login (using SL & Emerald clients, to different locations) have all been denied with the message I could log in 5 minutes from now. this has been over two hours now.
