Hi Devs, PSC,

We are going to give a "MapServer Project Status" presentation at FOSS4G
on Friday morning. I still need to complete a few slides, but I'd invite
you to review the current version in the next day or so, and let me know
if any important point is missing. Let's keep in mind that we don't want
to go into too much detail since we want to keep some time for
interaction with the users.

In PDF format:
   http://dl.mapgears.com/foss4g2009-mapserver-project-status.pdf

Or the original in Open Office format:
   http://dl.mapgears.com/foss4g2009-mapserver-project-status.odp

BTW, if other members of the dev/PSC team are in Sydney then you are
invited to join us so that users can meet us all... I think there is
only Paul but am not 100% sure.

Daniel

At the INTERGEO [1] in Karlsruhe/Germany I hold an presentation of the
same topic. Even if I cant answer questions at such an deep detail
level, I have a few points to share. Maybe its of some help:

verion 5.4.
first beta: 18.02.2009
final version: 22.04.2009

new in 5.4
-WMS 1.3.0 (SLD 1.1.0, pass basic query test of OGC CITE testsuite,
ordering of axis)
-Styling (SIZE, WIDTH not limited to integer anymore)
-MIN-/MAXSCALEDENOM (deprecating MIN-/MAXSCALE)
-OUTLINEWIDTH with line layer (independent of scale and extent)
-GEOMTRANSFORM (bbox, start/end, vertices and centroid in trunk)
(buffer, labelpoint, convexhull, simplify on todo list)
-better labeling with wrap/maxlen
-security updates

new in 5.6
-better curve labeling
-labeling of graticule on border

other things are already covered in your slides.

You can find my presentation at [2] but its in german.

I had some feedback where questions where asked about:
- labels with gradient color (#1305)
- graticule enhancements
- data formats MapServer can read
- performance of MapServer
- XML-Mapfile

Best wishes and good luck with your presentation

Lars

Daniel: thanks for this.  I would add:

Slide 3: 2006 addition of OGC:SOS (4.8).  If you haven't already, you'll
want to check out http://trac.osgeo.org/mapserver/wiki/MapServerHistory
for more items

Slide 13: the code sprint was in March 2009

Great work!

..Tom

Looks pretty good. The 5.4 release plan is pretty up-to-date with major additions (RFCs), bug fixes
and dates.

  5.4.0 - released April 23
  5.4.1 - released June 3
  5.4.2 - released June 24

Focus on security is good. Other 6.0 stuff I've been thinking about revolves around things like:

  - MapScript API clean up (fixing function signatures)
  - GD support clean up (remove anti-aliasing, perhaps move to new rendering API)
  - Template clean up (simplify supported tags)
  - Support for label styles
  - Inline SLD
  - Support for block references so things like styles or labels can be shared
  - Object (e.g. layerObj) serialization to strings

Might also talk about possibly adding additional communication channels such as a blog and perhaps a
Twitter channel.

Thanks for taking this on!

Steve

Thanks to all for your responses. I have integrated your
comments/sugestions and posted a new set of files at the URLs above.
There is just one slide left to finish, the History timeline which will
take more time, but other than that it's done.

BTW, it's a great week here... and busy as usual... you are all missed...

We'll also be giving a brief summary of OGC support in MapServer
(http://www.slideshare.net/gatewaygeomatics.com/summary-of-ogc-support-by-mapserver).
