Hello

My name is Tom Mueller and I am an associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at California University of Pennsylvania (35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh).  I was really disappointed when ESRI dropped ArcExplorer Java for Educators (AEJEE) and I have been looking for an alternative to develop K - 12 lessons.  I have read a little about MapWindow and I was wondering if this group thought this or some other Open GIS package could work for the K - 12 environment.

Thank you
Tom Mueller

Tom,

As the MapWindow team lead, I can tell you there is a lot that you can do in your K-12 with this software. All of your basic data visualization, editing shapefiles, working with attribute tables, various geoprocessing functions, and (as of lately) a pretty decent layout engine. The installer is pretty straightforward and it's very Windows friendly which can be nice for your particular audience.

Having said this, I am a supporter of all things open source GIS, so you may also want to look at gvSIG, UDIG and/or QGIS as good for the K-12 crowd.

Feel free to email me directly (amesdani at isu.edu) or post to the MapWindow discussion forums (www.mapwindow.org/phorum) if you have any specific questions on MapWindow.

I suspect there are a few folks on this list who can also say more about some of the other software I mentioned...

Hi Tom,
It's good to meet you and welcome to the list.  I'm sure MapWindow
would work for you, though several projects exist within OSGeo's
stack, in particular: Quantum GIS (http://qgis.org), gvSIG
(http://gvsig.org) and GRASS GIS for desktop GIS packages.

I'm most familiar with Quantum GIS (QGIS) and know it should be more
than enough compared to AEJEE.  I'll let others brag about their
favourites :)  QGIS also runs on all major operating systems, whereas
MapWindow is targeting Windows OS users in particular.  QGIS also comes
bundled with GRASS GIS for additional advanced capabilities.  For
anyone who has not checked out QGIS in the last year or so, I highly
recommend it - the amount of additional built-in and plug-in
functionality has greatly increased.

Several courses and books have been written around using QGIS and
GRASS.  See our courses database for examples.

Of course there are also other desktop GIS outside of OSGeo's
umbrella - e.g. uDig and OpenJUMP to name two.  gvSIG is also a good
package, just that I have not used it much so will leave that to
someone else to talk about.

Best wishes,
Tyler

Tyler stated that the list would like to know a little more about the project.  My mentor Jay Morgan (Towson University) created a set of lessons (K - 12) on a particular watershed in Maryland.  We were going to convert them to AEJEE until we heard that ESRI would stop backing it.  We decided to look into open source.  So we are going to try and convert these lessons using MapWindow and probably QGIS.  I will keep the group updated.

Hope that helps, I would also love to help the group in anyway I can
Tom

Thanks Tom,
Since several of us are digging into (largely post-secondary)
curriculum and training development, the approach that Jay has taken
may be interesting for us to understand as well.  Is the material
openly available for us to look at?
