I am a regular carrier.  I recently got a DUI and this is my 2nd.  The first coming 20 years ago...way before I was hired.  I am expecting to lose my license for a year.  I know the contract says that we can hire someone to drive for us.  Is this something that the P.O absolutely has to follow?  Will the P.O try and remove me, and is this something that I will have to fight?  Please any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The best advice I can give you is to call your State Steward.  They can tell you the current climate in your state so you get a better answer than our guesses and experiences.

As far as hiring a driver is concerned, that only can apply for your POV, you cannot hire a driver for an LLV. No offense, if I was in charge of USPS, I would fire you.

I hope you don't lose your license, and I wouldn't fire you. Your first offense happened 20 yrs ago. And this one happened on your own time. In our office we have a  regular city carrier who had a DUI (I don't think it is her first) and she gets paired up with another city carrier who drives ( i think he is a sub) and I think they split the routes they work. If the post office does that for city carriers, then I think they should let you get a driver. Heck, they should have a supervisor who doesn't do any more than walk the workroom floor drive you! But then I'd hate to have you stuck with management all day.

Question: Have you already been convicted of DUI of just charged with a DUI? If you've not gone to trial you need to get a good lawyer. But also contact your state steward to help with the PO stuff. Good luck.

This may be late in coming, but in the PO603 sect 172 Vehicle Operators Permit the way I am reading it it says if  in the suspension of your license you are still allowed to drive for employment purposes, you can still drive. There is a link to the PO603 at the left on this site under manuals and forms.
