From APWU

At a meeting at USPS Headquarters on June 23, the Postal Service briefed APWU Clerk Craft officers [PDF | Powerpoint presentation] about plans to consolidate operations in large stations and branches. Managers also provided the union with an updated list [Excel spreadsheet] of 3,243 stations and branches in Level-24-and-above installations that are being reviewed.

At the briefing, postal officials said that among the stations under review, 740 already had been identified as candidates for consolidation and/or closing.

what gets me about the list is that they are all larger branches that are easy to close without much paperwork to push through.  i know that the lack of resistance is the only reason that it's going this way.
i live in a very  rural area that has probably a dozen very small towns in a fifty mile radius that are within ten miles of larger towns.  some of these post offices have less than 25 boxes rented and yet we pay a postmaster 50k a year to sit in these offices and read books or play on the computer all day.  a rural carrier could sort the mail in 15 minutes and be on the way on the route, or some have a city carrier that could deliver everyone that he doesn't service already.    even the building rent and utilities could be saved with putting in a couple of cluster boxes.  i'm sure alot can be saved closing the larger branches but fewer customers would be affected by closing these little offices as well.

i agree we have 6 post offices in a 25 miles radius small rural towns.  a least 3 could be gone  save 150.000 in postmaster pay, plus all the clerks, building rents and lights ...

I concur.  Same situation around here.  These little Post Offices seem to be where old clerks go to die.
If Postmasters were Union members they would be the first ones to go.

It does not matter what size office it is.  People will be all for closing offices as long as it is not "their" local post office.  In todays fast paced get it done right now world, people do not want to drive an extra 5 miles to the next office.  You read about it all the time and not just with post offices.  Every one agrees that something has to be done just not in their back yard.  You start closing down the post offices and everyone will be calling their senator or congressperson complaining about how important it is to keep it.  There was a very small post office south of Ennis that they tried to close down several years ago.  Community of about 300. Only employee was the postmaster.   Because some one was related to a senator they not only did not close down the office but got a new building.

All that these customers would need to be told is that
it is possible for packages to be picked up, stamps to
be bought and any other service they would do at the
PO window to be handled by their carrier.  Most people
DO NOT know this.  City carriers could be made to do the
same thing as us, then the offices could be downsized,
carriers doing their jobs, and customers would be happier.
Just saying!

If they are considering closing everything on that list, then we will not be serving Dallas/Fort Worth at all, seems a little unrealistic to me.

There's a story on Washington Post.com today with a list of 677 post offices for possible closure or consolidation, so possibly they've winnowed the previous list down. Here's the new list:

And the full story:

You have indicated that you are considering three Vero Beach Post Offices for closure--two in Vero Beach area & one Vero Beach Citrus Branch office. First of all, let me inform you that by your proposed 1,000 listing you are doing the American people a complete injustice. If this is how your government services deems appropriate after you're inability to manage yourselves properly, it is outrageous and despicable that you are going to saddle the American people with a major impediment to being able to get bills, letters, correspondence, parcels and packages to other places in the United States. Maybe you should go back to Pony Express because the overhead would be much less than your expensive gas guzzling trucks. How do you propose we get out mail to get to where it should be as an alternative? NOTHING! This is not the solution that the American people need at this time in view of the fact that all other costs are escalating and Obama is proposing massive tax increases.

Please leave the Vero Beach Post office open located on 20th Street near 82nd Avenue. At least one Post Office should be allowed to remain open in the Vero Beach office.  This is the newest, most modern facility, and should be retained to service the public.  No Post Offices in Vero Beach, FL is not an appropriate solution. Re-examine your closure list and retain this new modern facility for the American public's necessity to get their mail through to the country and world!
