Lilly and Holden talk about Luke and Noah

Setting: In the bedroom of Holden and Lilly Snyder

Lilly is putting on lotion as she walks out of the bathroom and dressed in a robe.  Holden comes out of the bathroom in just a towel.

Holden: Well Mrs. Snyder, that was a nice way of saying thank you for cooking dinner.

Lilly: My pleasure Mr. Snyder.  

The two began to embrace and laugh then kiss.  Holden begins to have a look of worry.  Lilly notices that he is lost in thought.

Lilly: Holden, is something wrong?

Holden walks to the bed and sits down.

Holden: No, nothing wrong, persay.  Its just Luke.  Luke and Noah.

Lilly, looking a bit concerned walks over and sits beside him.

Lilly: What about Luke and Noah?

Holden: I interrupted them having sex in Luke’s room.

Lilly: You what?

Holden: I knocked on the door to tell Luke it was time for dinner.  I noticed it was locked and then he got real quit.  Said he was coming down.

Lilly: So Noah didn’t just show up at the right time for dinner?

Holden: No, I caught him trying to sneak out the front door and invited him to dinner.

Lilly: Ahhhh, well that was big of you.  You could have ordered him out.

Holden: What good would that have done?  He is a nice guy and loves Luke.  Luke and he are happy, its just…

Lilly: What?

Holden: Well, I worry about Luke, probably a little more than the other kids.

Lilly: I know what you mean, he has been through so much.  First the transplant, then coming out, Noah marrying Ameera, the election and being kicked out of school.  

Holden: The kid has had a rough couple of years.

Lilly: Did, you ask him about what was going on between them?

Holden: Yes, he admitted they are having sex.

Lilly: Oh…

Lilly gets up, Holden follows behind her

Holden: I know, it was a surprise to me as well.  They lived at the farm for so long together without having sex, I think I kind of put the thought out of my mind.  Sort of like how I tried to push the thought of Luke being gay out of my mind.

Lilly: Did he tell you details?  Are they being safe?  Have they been tested?

Holden: They are being safe, this wasn’t their first time.  I told them it was ok for them to be having sex in the house as long as Faith, and especially Ethan and Natalie were not home.  He agreed.  I didn’t ask for details, I told him it would be like me talking to him about our sex life.

Lilly: Don’t you dare!!

Holden laughs and pulls Lilly back to him for a kiss

Holden: I wouldn’t in a million years.  I also told him I didn’t want to know the details.  I really don’t want to think about him and Noah having sex.  

Lilly: Well at least they are being safe.  What about testing?

The two separate but remain standing.

Holden: He said they haven’t been tested yet, but planned to soon.  I told him to let me know when they did.

Lilly: I guess that is all we can do.  Hope they are safe, that he is being honest with us.  He is an adult now, he is going to make his own choices.

Holden: You are surprisingly calm about all this.

Lilly: I just want Luke to be happy.  If Noah makes him happy, which he does, then I am happy.  I have to get used to the idea that he is not our little boy anymore.  

Holden: If it were only so easy.

Lilly: Lets get some sleep, its been a long day.

Later that night.  Lilly has a bad dream about Noah and Luke having sex.  She wakes up in a sweat.

Holden: Lilly are you alright?

Lilly: Yeah, just a bad dream.

Holden: What about?

Lilly: Luke and Noah having sex.   I guess I am not as comfortable about all this as I thought.

Holden: Well good.

Lilly: Why good?

Holden: I am not alone about feeling a little weird about all this.

Lilly: No, you are definitely not alone.  I guess no parent wants to think about their kids having sex.

Holden: Lets just try to get some more sleep.  We can talk about it more in the morning.  Maybe even talk to the boys.

Lilly: Goodnight hun.

Holden: Night.

The two kiss and begin to fall asleep.

Hey Chris,

Good talking scenario between Holden and Lily in their bedroom.  They should be concerned about their son, Luke!!  If I had awakened from a bad dream like that about Noah and Luke having sex, I think I would have wanted to talk a little more about it, before being able to head off back to sleep.  We know more about Holden's feelings than Lily's about Luke having sex with Noah.

Thanks for the feedback.  I think I was writing it from a standpoint that men tend to have a harder time dealing with their sons being gay than women do.  But I think adding some extra time for Lilly to discuss her issues could be beneficial.  I just want to avoid having her go into great detail, this is a soap, not a porno, lol.

Another good script, Chris.  Waking up after a "bad" dream emphasizes how difficult it must be for both parents to accept their son's being gay. The more I think about it--it's a process, not a one-time thing where the parents hear about this and then accept it.  It takes a long time--perhaps years for this to really sink in and have parents' full acceptance.  Your scenario of how the initial scene could be played out seemed quite natural and reasonable.  I'm not sure this somewhat idealized picture would really play out in this way in real homes.  We could only hope.  You have a definite flair for this type of writing.  I look forward to reading more.

Thanks again for the positive feedback.  I agree that in a real life scenario things would not go as easily as they have on the show.  Not only did Holden and Lilly rather quickly accept then embrace Luke being gay, but they also rather quickly adopted Noah as a suregate son.  That is somewhat fitting though, because if Noah and Luke decide to get married or have a civil union, then he would be their son in-law.  I wrote the Holden/Lilly scene as a lead in scene to another sitdown, this time with both the boys and Holden and Lilly.  I haven't gotten to writting it yet, as its sort of a difficult scene to write and make it fitting.  These are college age men, not high school students.  However, I still think concerned parents might follow up and ask a few more questions, make sure they are getting tested.

Chris, you're right about Lily and Holden accepting that Luke was gay.  However, don't forget that Lily tried to get Damien to enroll him in a class to straighten him out.  Do I have that right?  My memory isn't too clear on what happened, but I think Lily supported this scheme.  Then afterward, she began to accept Luke as gay.   (Do I have this convoluted??)  If so, I apologize!!

Dave,

Damien was behind the straight camp.  While Lilly was onboard with the idea, she was under the impression that it was more of a fun camp where kids go to figure things out.  In her mind it was more about a way for Luke to find out if he was truly gay or just confussed.  When she found out that it was a brain washing camp, she headed home, kicked out Kruger (the rep for the camp) and tried to tell Luke she was sorry.  When she confronted him, he accidently bushed her down the stairs.  She was comotosed, but when she came through, she was very accepting.  So while the coma stretched things out, she pretty my accepted Luke once she realized how bad the straight camp was.

You are welcome, Chris!!  You are right about men generally having a hard time dealing with a gay son.  Lily doesn't have to go into great detail, if she doesn't beat around the bush and comes to a direct point(s).  These writers love to miss the boat on details, I don't think you have to worry about that!!  LOL
