Layouter: different datasets in different frames -- creating insets

Dear list,

I find QGIS a very promising package to do real sophisticated GIS analyses and cartography. Regarding that last bit, I have a practical question: how can I add an "inset map" next to a frame featuring a detailed map of a certain area. I managed to insert two frames with the same contents, but different zoom levels (as illustrated by the attached GIF-image). However, I wish to use different data in each of the frames... How can I do this?

And how about inserting the frame extends (the indicating box in the overview inset map)?

Regards,
Rob

What about using scale dependent rendering?
i.e. have different rendering scales for your different data?

Hi Rob

You may use the checkbox 'keep layer list' of the composer map widgets for
this:
-Load all the data into QGIS
- Set the layers for map1 visible, go to the composer, add the first composer
map and check 'keep layer list'
- Go back to the main map, set the layers for map2 visible and all others
visible. The layers in composermap 1 will remain as long as they are in the
layer list
- Go to the composer and add the second composer map. The second map will now
show layer set 2 while the first one keeps its layers.

Hope it works,
Marco

Ups, little (probably confusing) typo:

set the layers for map2 visible and all others visible

->

set the layers for map2 visible and all others invisible

Works like a charm! (I must say: this feature is poorly documented...)

Still open: wondering whether I can indicate the extends of one frame by enabling a bounding rectangle in the other?

Thank you list,
Rob

Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)
Marco,

Can I suggest that this item be called "Lock layers for map item" instead of "keep layer list"? I think it will be more intuitive for people this way. Other suggestions are encouraged.

John

Hi John

"Lock layers for map item" sounds good. Applied in r11866
