For slurs you need to select the note that you want to add a slur too.
I'm not sure why you are having trouble with the other two shortcuts. If
you haven't already read through the handbook I would recommend it
(particularly the section on the basics).
Also it is helpful to us if you include the version of MuseScore you are
using and the operating system when you ask questions on the developer's
mailing list or the users forums:
