Without giving away my identity I would like to know when it is time to walk away from this crappy ass job known as an RCA. Working 40+ hours a week since we are so short handed, leaving my house at 6am and not returning until 6pm because I have a 40 minute drive each way and have to pick the kids up from daycare, having to tell my kids "no" all summer, and my poor husband not getting any sleep since he works graveyard and has the kids half the day. Did I mention I haven't seen my husband pretty much the whole month of august since he works 50 hours a week? I don't need the money, it is nice, but money isn't everything, I don't have time to enjoy it anyway. My kids have a pissy attitude because they miss me and they start school next week. Had today off and just got a call to maybe come in tomorrow since the other sub is threatening to quit if they have to work a certain route tomorrow. If that happens, guess what the PM will get my notice too and then he will have no subs!! Just venting thanks for listening!!

Molly and the rest of the precious subs we have left,

l am glad you vented and I hope it helps relieve some of the stress.  Here is my suggestion for you, you need to think about this choice for a few more days and see what you really want most in this life.  Is your husband's job secure?  Are the number of hours he works going to remain the same despite any economic downturn that might come?  Is your family your priority or the job?  Can you transfer to an office that would require less of a demand on you?

Best of luck making a hard decision.

Sounds like you need to go work at Mcdonalds for awhile, then you may appreciate what you have here. sure being a sub is tough,  just enjoy the fact you are getting $$. some subs in smaller offices are begging for work, only working one or two days a month. Maybe try to transfer somewhere else.  In  looking in your other posts, I believe you need to find another line of work. Nothing suites you at the usps. JUSt more griping about one of the best paying jobs around.

Mr. DUH, you are right.  Molly is not indentured, she's more like a slave.
An indentured servant is a laborer under contract of an employer for usually three to seven years, in exchange for their transportation, food, drink, clothing, lodging and other necessities. Unlike a slave, an indentured servant is required to work only for a limited term specified in a signed contract.

I totally understand how you felt.  I always wish that one day someone will rally all the Rural Carriers to go on Strike and see how the PO handles it.  We, American, are one of the hardest workers in this world.  If your crappy scenario happened in other developed countries, I am sure those workers have already gone on Strike.  If you don't believe me, do some researches on Canada, UK, or France.  Also, if there are so many of us complaining about this organization, there have to be something wrong with it.
God bless us all!

Dave you are right.  I wish I was working that much, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be complaining about it.  But then again, I DO need the money.

molly, this is pathetic, man, i'm a single mom trying to get by and you're bitching about all the hours you have to work. dang, i practically have to go begging for the lousy 7 and a half hours (averaged over the last year) a week i get.  geez, i'd kill to get 40 hours a week! why don't you transfer to some dinky office with 3 routes then you'll see the other side of the fence where, believe me, the grass is just as brown as on your side.  another thing that gets me pissed is when people like you bitch about not having time with your family because you have to work so much then you say you don't really need the money....then damn!!!!! QUIT!!!!! leave the position open for those who want to work and need the money and stop your damn belly-aching! sorry to be so blunt and don't mean to start anything but hey, if the shoe fits!

I almost feel guilty about qutting, since our Pm hasn't replaced the last three subs that have quit. One sub is covering a route full time that is supposed to be dissolved, but he hasn't gotten around to that either, so we don't have that sub 6 days a week. So that leaves two of us to cover days off for 5 routes, can't even get other subs from different offices to come over and carry a route. If I quit along with the other sub who threatened to last week, then none of the regulars who I have come to like, will get a day off.

i think that you should decide for yourself how many hours you want to work.  if you are working ten hours a day then maybe you only want to work 4 days a week.   after you decide how many days you want to work you can do either of two things. 1)  advise the postmaster that you will only be available 4 days a week and see what happens  or 2)  schedule an appointment with your physician and explain the problem to him/her;  describe the stress it is putting on you and your family.   If your doctor is willing to fill out fmla (family medical leave act) paperwork then have him/ her do so.  the doctor can require the post office to reduce your hours or days.  then... take the paperwork to work and advise the postmaster that you can only work x number of days.  your supervisor or postmaster should be able to get you the fmla paperwork.

your  family should be your primary concern.

Molly, dont get upset over some of the dumb answers you will or have gotten, a lot of areas subs  treated fairly by managers, have seen that in the past and have seen them run into the ground here in the past, but here harder to get subs, so they arent  treated as badly, but I will admit they would like some time off, but unless they want a week or so, its hard for them just to get a day!   Here regulars are not needed as much, FSS they would love to see a number of them quit or retire, out of 22 routes they predict well loose 5 or 6 just to make us all 40Hs!

You said that if you quit there will be no one to work the regulars off days.  Soooooooo?  It seems to me that they don't give a hooty hoot if you have a day off, why should you care?
Just making a point here, been there done that.  Just wait till they get a sub who has a "regular" job during the week and can only work saturdays,,,,,when I was hired, I was told that the job was working off days, sick days, and vacation days, oh yeah and you WILL have a vehicle, in fact some subs are harrassed because they don't have a "back up" vehicle, what nonsense!  the regulars aren't expected to have a backup but the subs who make half of what they do are?  What's up with that?
I am going regular in a few weeks, so I can't wait for all the fun and games that will go on in my office.

My heart goes out to you. I've been a regular for the last 23 years. The Post Office isn't what it used to be and it going to be changing a lot in the future. It's been a good job for me and I hope to go five more years and retire but I can't count on it. It's a very fluid situation right now. If you don't see becoming  a regular or relief from your situation anytime soon, then find something else. While you need money to pay the bills, life is short and your kids will be grown and gone before you know it. Life is fragile too. Enjoy your husband and let him enjoy you. Good luck.

What?!? You mean subs have lives other than being at the beck and call of the post office and regular carriers? Who would have thought?

Yeah, fact is, even subs have spouses, kids who have needs and events to deal with, sick relatives, even sicknesses on their own. Shucks, some even go so far as to simply want a day off ever now an' again. maybe even a vacaton. The world sure is a funny place, huh?

On the other hand, in just about every 'fed up RCA' post I've read, at least one person will give advice that goes along the lines of, "Well, maybe you should consider some other line of work".

Well, in my life, I've worked at just about every concievable job category you can imagine, uh, with the exception of 'Mafia Contract Killer', for which I personally think I'm temperamentally unfit, and besides, I can't afford the necessary tools for that particular profession. I've had jobs that absolutely defined 'the pits', while I've had jobs where I walked around kind of chuckling to myself and saying, "And they're PAYING me to do this!".

Of them all though, I'll put rural mail carrier in first place. I've always dreamed of a job where I had a set amount of work to do, and when done, would be allowed to go home, with my pay undiminished. Jobs like that though, are far and few between. And truth is, you pretty much have to pay your dues before getting that kind of job.

So like thousands of others, I paid my dues as a sub, bullied by regular carriers, intimidated by management, given too little training (especially in respect to my 'in the office' duties) and too little information. The first six months, every time I walked into that post office, I was totally convinced I'd be fired before the day was out. I worked like a dog doing my best to have a car and a back up, and to keep the stupid things running all the time, without that eating up all my pay. In my other work (self employed), I would refuse to go on a call until after 10:00 a.m., just in case a regular called and needed me to run the route. And I don't want to even get into working after holidays, after every bloomin' holiday....

And every day I came in to work, I looked upon a whole bunch of regulars who not only looked young, but were. I could be forgiven for thinking I'd NEVER make to regular carrier. Being a praying man, it was the hardest thing I've ever done NOT to pray that certain regulars didn't get cancer and die, real quick.

But in the fulness of time, my ship came in. The last young regular retired young (if only I'd known I could get and do this job when I was in my 20's...I'd be retired now myself), and I ascended to my own route.

And that dream job? Well, I've got it now. I work less than six hours a day, oftentimes as little as five. I am home by 1:30 p.m. most days, and am paid through 4:30 p.m. I have eight weeks off per year, with pay (sick leave is counted, but I'm banking most of that). I have a dream sub who not only wants to work, but who is the most accurate and conscientious carrier I've ever known.

So my advice is, if you can, in any possible way, stick it out, you'll be glad you did. Use the union, grieve anything that you believe to be contrary to the contract, keep your head up, try to fly below the radar, and one of these days, you'll be in much better shape, financially at any rate. You might even feel better about yourself, the job, the world....just my opinion.

Jubalee, You, my friend, should write a book. You have a way with words!! I spent many a year as a sub (19 to be exact). It was great while the kids were growing up, I could go to most all of their activities other than the ones that happened on Saturday.  Plus, having a part time job that paid like $20/hour was a dream! I like my job a lot as a regular. I am in a one route office. It is beautiful here, I have a wonderful, kind post master. The only thing that sucks is that all those years as an RCA don't count for retirement. So that I can get 15 years in I have to work until I am 67 and a half which is another 12 years. Will my body hold out? I don't know. I think my mind will be okay, although the senior moments have been sneaking up on me more frequently lately.
