We have been up to some more exciting changes at ORP.

FIA curbing is being installed at each corner and will soon be painted. "Jersey" barriers have been installed along the main straight, and between the hot pits and the main paddock. Barriers have also been installed around the base of every turn station. We are also in the process of laying phone lines to the offices, and a well and water lines.

We have also planted grass around the track to help keep dust and dirt from getting on the track during wind and rain events.

Be sure to watch the events calendar on our web site to see when your favorite club or group is having an event, and come on out to see the changes!

So who do the people that are expected to utilize these wooden structures speak to.

They don't seem to be completed...or safe to stand on/in.  No!  Really.  Ladders?  Guy wires?   Yes, it's windy, but a bit more design effort is necessary.

Obviously no one involved in this configuration has ever attempted to avoid incoming race vehicles, nor responded to stricken race vehicles in their areas of responsibility.

They really look like something that a slide should be going down the other side.

Also, can you post some pictures of the tire walls that I expect to be repairing to stay on schedule at future events?

As a turn worker for many years, i feel that these turn stations are not safe. They have no clear exit for responding to or from an incoming care. I do give props to the students for their work but the guys who gave them the design should rethink it. There needs to be some changes to make these stations better or it will be hard to find people to come work at the track. The average age of the turn workers is closer to 40 not 20 like me. I hope to see some changes as i really look forward to coming over there for the tc in oct. If you would like some input for improvments email me.

Thanks

We have 2 car guys complaining about poor design yet I see no suggestions of what to change. How helpful is that?
Personally I think the design is fine as it provides excellent visibilty and they are positioned out of the impact zones.
Maybe adding a slide would help get the older folks out quicker so they can hobble over to assist with a crash?

as with any new facility there are teething problems and concerns. I ride a motorcycle and my concerns are quite different from the car guys as far as what I consider a Safety feature. Because of that I would add specifics to my message detailing what I would like to see and why. This approach will give the track management something to work with.

Try this approach in the future for everyones benefit.

We are laying pipe and wire in trenches as we email.

The county seems to be preping Blagg for chip seal- maybe even this week!  But, hey, it is a government job.  ;-)

Jim,

Our track manager and his wife have both been down with pneumonia. I apologize for the lack of follow through.

I am not sure of the current status of the power and water projects. I will try to find out and get back to you.

You see no suggestions on this forum because this forum won't feed the dog of change.

The suggestions that you suggest are better place in the ears of those that may actually do something, to be sure.  And so they have, since my last posting.

Does crawling through a hole into the station from a ladder, and out again numerous times throughout an event weekend may seem normal?  Not even to an OMRRA worker.  And many of them aren't getting any younger either.

I take it that you've also been standing all day in the constant 20-30 mph that will catch the angle of that roof line whether down force or lift, but will eventually pull itself  apart as it torques the rest of the structure.  Perhaps OMRRA will flag from the edge of the surface, and only a communicator will habitate the tower, but not so with the sports car flaggers.

Now lets talk foundation... The legs of the structure are secured in some fashion with turnbuckled guy wires.  A square platform might have been a sturdier design, but without cross-member supports and a supporting stairway structure component, the wiggle factor with us "older" folks moving around upstairs will become another wear factor.

These structures, as built, won't last until the next season (if this one gets started).

I've worked the bikes too.  Cars don't adhere to that unproven rule that says they all go to the outside of the turn.  And station placement isn't the issue.  I just don't want to be standing on one as it gives up to a wind gust.

These suggestions, and more have been communicated off line to the appropriate folks, once found, and that is why you see little more of it on this forum.

The Pros From Dover are all over this bit.  It's not rocket science.  It a lack of perspective.

Thanks for your support, Jim.  We are all working toward a world class racing environment.

Ken,

I'm certain ORP would gladly accept your financial, material, and labor contributions towards world class corners stations.

With the current economic conditions I'm just thankful to have a track of this caliber available.

Please make a contribution.

I'll be there for the 2-Fast track day on the 15th, can't make the open house.  Regretefully with a young family, a business, and the 4 hour oneway drive the 29th isn't an option.

ANY chance of a shower up and running by this weekend's event?

A shower will make that place almost habitable! (as in, I may NEVER go home!) :)

details?

May I suggest baby wipes or a room at The Tall Winds in Moro?

Doesn't look like it's going to be very hot this weekend, compared to what it could be.

I am coming from the Bay Area to try this track out this weekend.  The Tall Winds is sold out :(  I too am interested in knowing if there will be a shower/showers available?  Also, I've tried calling that RV Park in Grass Valley a billion times, and nobody ever seems to answer or return calls.  Are they still open?  Thanks!  See ya all this weekend.  Look for me and say hello, bike 923!!
