lots of little things enter into this. most of the problem with early wear have to do with heat.  i have a 110 mile route with 330 stops, ( about half gravel), plus a daily commute of 30 miles round trip.  slowing down on the speed you travel will help some, and is the easiest thing to help.  i have been using wagner therm quiet ceramic pads. (rock auto parts online - about $60-70 , and right now they have a 30.00 rebate on complete f&r)  i also put on drilled brake rotors to help keep things cool. (ebay - $100.00 for set of four).  now for the good news - the last set i changed, 51 weeks, on the route.

this is on a grand cherokee.  before i got this truck, i drove chevy blazers. they where the  worst vehicles on brakes that i ever had.  at best i might get 4 months out of a set.  there pads and rotors where slightly smaller, making the problem worse.  dust is something that you can't do anything about, but the speed is what produces the heat. i always keep a set of pads onhand so you can change them as soon as needed, helping keep extra wear off rotors.

one other thing i forgot to address is the possibility of one or more bad wheel cylinders, or a bad master cylinder.  if you have unever wear, either side to side or front to rear, this is something you need to check out.
also movement of an individual set of pads needs to be considered. wear should be even between inner and outer pads of each wheel. sometimes this could just be a little dirt, rust, or corrosion of mounting bolts or slide surfaces. a wire brush or wire wheel speeds cleanup and a light coating of white grease can help things moving as they should.  i also use a silicone glue made for brakes to help hold the pads to the callipers. it probably doesn't improve brake life as much as keeping them from squeaking each time you apply the brakes.  hope this helps, good luck!
