Is my job on the line?

Now let me start off by saying that this web project of mine isn't a full time job, i don't get paid, in fact none of our staff will be getting paid until we garner revenue from the google ads we are implementing in the site (they will of course will not intrude on the overall experience of A Tic of Motion.). Now that i've gone off on my tangent, i must say i have become even more disheartened with the current state of economy, and what has caused this you may ask ?

Well i work for a local bread company, now i've never been sent home early, but here is an excerpt from a conversation i had with my assistant manager:

We didn't make as much money this holiday season as we thought, we've gone three hours now without enough people buying bread to cover the cost of two employees working, we currently have four of you working, i need to send two of you home. So of course, myself and another girl were sent home because the other two are managers.

So what is my conclusion from this? My job, part time as it may be, is on the line because the economy is on the decline. Now i've been in front of my computer filling out application and reading Crime and Punishment, so amidst all this, punishment unto my own self, what are your all's thoughts on the job market for Teens/Young adults (17-26)?

All I hear is you bitching about being sent home early.

I know I complain about my job at times, but it's not that bad. I'm a "front-end greeter" (aka bag boy) for Kroger and there's nothing being said about anyone having to leave. I think if teens are that desperate for a job they should just take a job no one else wants, thus solidifying their job.

i think you miss the point, it's the fact that they didn't make enough money this holiday season, sending people home early only happens, really if you're not making any money and considering, and i have to talked to my co-workers, in the twenty years that store has been open, no one has ever been sent home early up until the last few months or so. So sure, on the surface it looks like all i'm doing is complaining about me being sent home early, when in fact there is something much larger at hand, perhaps if you would read beyond the words and understand it.....

except some people, who will be in college soon, deserve a bit more than being a bag boy, especially when they've been in the job industry for 2 years not including the amount of years they volunteered at a hospital before then.

I was kidding.  Hence the 5 s.

The reason I didn't make any actual commentary on this is because I'm not exactly employed by an agency which is affected much by the state of the economy.  I haven't had to actually search for a job yet--the one I have was kind of waiting for me--so I don't really know what it's like.

So, wait what are we debating here?
Jobs in general or the jobs of pre-college kids?

no, my point is, that for people just starting out in the job market, bagging is a good job, for people that have moved beyond that to actually dealing with angry customers on daily basis deserve a job that pays more than a grocery bagger, the more experience you have the better job/more pay you get, thats the philosophy of any employer and worker who knows if he's worth two cents or not.

I actually agree with Porcelain... being a more or less minimum wage laborer in the service industry for an entire two years (gasp!) entitles you to a fantastic job? Welcome to the real world... right now you're lucky to have a job, I've been applying to places for the last 3 weeks and haven't found anywhere that's hiring.
Kicking ass and taking names...

Well, considering, i don't think i should have to make $6.55 an hour when i currently make $7.00. but you know what, all is well that ends well, because if everything goes right, i have an interview at UK coming up and will soon be making around $10.00 an hour.

No offense man but no matter who you are, you can find a job. If your that desperate for a source of income you can find a job, given granted it may not be a job you want, but it's still work. In terms of work, you never should never put yourself above something (like working in fastfood for an example) because if it comes down to it,  you'll do it. I might go against what you think your above, but you'll do it.

If your worried about finding a source of income during your time in college than well take  whatever jobs you can get. Yes, that was plural. One job won't keep your head above the waters of debt. Now i still got about a year left before i make a finally decesion about what school i want to go, but i do know that the one i pick, will be the one who offfers me the most scholarships. Picking a college out of range and then complaing about it, is just stupid. It doesn't matter where you get your degree from, just as long as you have a degree. So picking the right school within your price range also factors into it a lot.

Also on a side note: I have a friend who holds down 2 jobs and 2 part-times jobs. His part-time stuff is babysitting and tutoring. His full time jobs include working in a comic book store and being a Latin proffesor at UK. Despite all of the things he does for money he's still struggling to get by.

I understand everything you're saying, but this wasn't a discussion regarding college, no if i contain too much to pride to work certain places, i do have a lot of pride, and i won't settle for McDonalds, when i can work at Hospital, especially when i can work at a Hospital.

The idea was for my predicament concerning my current job and what i over heard, "we didn't make money this holiday season" to get discussion going not about what jobs teens or college students should be looking for, but for us to discuss the current state of the job market and how it's going to really destroy a lot of our jobs, and yes that goes for the bag boys, the people at mcdonalds and what not, everyone's job really is on the chopping block, I'll be honest, you're only safe, and this is slightly, you're only safe say in a Hospital or a job considered priority. So maybe from now on i'll give a bit more direction as to where i'd like the discussion to go, because i don't need anyone telling me what jobs i should be going for....how i chose my college and what not, believe i know how to live my life, i've gotten this far.

Sorry  if i derailed the thread, i really didn't know what you were aiming for here. Also i didn't mean for that to be any kind of personal attack, so like you know, don't take it as one. That really wasn't what i was going for.

none taken, i just get a bit irate when people seem to miss the direction of my threads....although i'll just start spoon-wording (known as spoon feeding) my threads so it doesn't happen again. Here is what i meant for this thread to be about:

for us to discuss the current state of the job market and how it's going to really destroy a lot of our jobs, and yes that goes for the bag boys, the people at mcdonalds and what not, everyone's job really is on the chopping block, I'll be honest, you're only safe, and this is slightly, you're only safe say in a Hospital or a job considered priority.

I know what you mean. I used to work at a place similar to Culver's that when less costumers were coming in than he could pay that amount of employees for their time, eh's start sending people home. This would especially happen during the winter when it snowed and no one was leaving their homes. I quit that job evenutally because of scheduling reasons, but most companies will do that. When they feel that they are losing money by keeping you there, they will send you home.
I don't think your job at the moment is in any danger per say though. As long as you work diligently and the company doesn't go underwater, you're fine. However, you might start seeing less work hours.
Right now I'm in a tutoring business, and that's worrying because it's a steep cost (about 100 dollars a month) for parents to send their kids there. Granted the place I live in has people who make half a million or up often, but we are starting to see lower turnouts and people are getting fired or have less work hours. It's going to get to a point where teenagers are going to have to complete against adults for a job at McDonald's, because as the economy gets worse, people will take jobs anywhere.
