Thanks,
That's great to hear.

Ya, that's the great power of OpenStreetMap.org, it's not technically possible to know whats going on everywhere. Although i don't know who Peter Batty is, I'm sure he did a great job at sharing whats going on with OpenStreetMap.

For everyone, feel free to join in the talk-ca discussion list, as i don't want to be filling up the OSGeo mailing list, with OSM updates.
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

As we all do this on a volunteer basis, we do our best to try to answer every and all questions that people ask. I also realize that going through the archives, it might be hard to follow. So I'm happy to answer specific questions that people might have.

On August 11th I'll be hosting a mapping party, where we will be able to go over in detail the progress so far, and how others can help.
My personal goal is to get Vancouver Island mapped out as much as possible, with all the data imported that is currently available to us to use. In that process, more mistakes will be found, and the actual import process will be perfected.
By actually getting together in person, we can answer questions and brainstorm ideas that haven't been thought of yet. And doing so, could change the entire process of looking at it.

The purpose of this meeting is to meet others who are also interested in making Vancouver Island the best mapped place on earth :) ... since it cant be done alone, it's a team effort :)

Look forward to seeing whoever can make it.

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans
Across Canada Trails

Twitter: @Acrosscanada
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sam.vekemans

I am sorry that we were not able to get the Telecom working for you
during our OSGeo BC meeting. We also had some projector problems that
day and so we had a low tech meeting.

Fortunately, Peter Batty was in town and he had been to the recent
OpenStreetMap event. He gave the group an overview of the program and we
look forward to your updates, along with those below, in the future.

We had good presentations from both Tyler Mitchell, on OSGeo in general
and a good presentation by Mehdi Bokhari on the work of PromoteGIS.

In all, I believe we had 26 people attend and some rousing
discussions...good pizza and Andreas Matheus, of Secure Dimensions in
Munich, supported the group with the Octoberfest Beer.

I will update the wiki in the days to come and we can start planning
ideas for a December meeting.
A quick email summary then.

1 -OpenStreetMap foundation is going to be 3 years old in August. With
over 100,000 contributors, Happy Birthday!

2 -Its made up of volunteers, with no direct financial gain, just in
the pride that we, the people of the world, are making a map that is
totally free for anyone to use and edit. :-)

3 - Garmin maps; Cycle routing; iphone map; 3d maps; SHP files;
wikiTravel maps; wikipedia maps etc. There is no limit to what
creative things people can make using the OSM database. :-)

4 So if you see where the map needs improvement, local mappers in the
area can help. What we do is have get-to-gethers, or mapping parties.

5 - join the [hidden email] discussion list, to see how you
can help.

6 - on aug 11th im hosting a Vancouver island OpenStreetMap party in
Victoria. All those interested are welcome to attend. I can show you
all in person the answers to many of your questions. (details will be
posted to the talk-ca list and on the wiki.)

Thats all for now,
Best,
