I'm Russ, originally from Cambridge and London, UK and living here in NZ
since July 2005.

I have lived and worked in Cambridge, London, Perth, Auckland and
Wellington and have skills primarily in XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP,
MySQL, Linux, Zope, Plone and Python.

I am or perhaps more accurately, I was, a PHP/MySQL developer but have
only written a handful of PHP scripts in the last 2 years given that my
organisation (GNS Science, specifically the GeoNet project -
www.geonet.org.nz) had me deploy a custom Zope 2/Plone 2 site a wee while
ago.

While I have about 18 months of experience working with the Zope/Plone
stack I still have weekly issues figuring out what Python code I can and
cannot use in what context (pardon the pun). I think customising for Zope
in Python has actually *stunted* my learning Python, given that only a
subset is allowed within a "Python Script" inside Zope and I didn't
discover External Methods until a few months ago!

Cheers and welcome :-)
Russ

Hi All,

I suppose I'd best join the crowd :) I'm a big systems guy - I do
contracting work with Windows, Unix, Linux, and have been developing with
Python on and off for the last decade or so. I've been using Plone since
1.something (or maybe it was 0.9? memory begins to fail after a few years
;). Currently as well as systems contracting I provide Zope/Plone/Python
development and webhosting. Probably my most noteworthy project has been
that I developed and implemented a Plone solution for a Large Government
Department for one of the busiest government sites here in NZ, and have
been working with them extending it and using the model to deploy more
sites along the same lines for the last year or two.

In terms of Python code, some sample work is I currently maintain the
ntlmaps project (http://ntlmaps.sourceforge.net) (although it's been a
quiet year on that front this year - Real Life with baby no#4 has slowed
me down!), and wrote a Python sourcecode obfuscator that has generated a
bit of interest over the last year or two
(http://pythonhacker.is-a-geek.net/my_programs/pyfuscate).

I agree that Zope/Plone is probably not the best introduction to Python
coding in general. It is a minefield, and, in my opinion, zcml with
Zope3/Five just adds to the mess :)

Anyhow, with any luck I'll be there on Friday at Galbraiths.

regards,
