Installing the Qgis 1.0.2 package for Ubuntu

Hello,
Since I cant get the first tutorial application (timtut1.exe) to work for
Windows I'm trying to see if I can make it work on Ubuntu.
So I installed Ubuntu Karmic Koala last night. It's been out since the 29th of October, if I remember rightly.
When I go to look for the Ubuntu package on
https://launchpad.net/~qgis/+archive/stable
I see that Karmic Koala (the latest Ubuntu) is not yet taken into account.
Can I use the Jaunty package?

Henri

9.10 is there as the default; you'll see it reads:

"You can update your system with unsupported packages from this
untrusted PPA by adding ppa:qgis/stable to your system's Software
Sources. "

The it says:

"Not using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)?"

So click there if you're not using Karmic, otherwise, read the first sentence.

That's how I understand it at least...

Cheers, Joseph

Hi Henri,

I thin you were right with your original email - Karmic releases don't
seem to be there.

PPAs are "Private Package Archives" - basically software that isn't in
the main Ubuntu repositories, Usually this represents development
releases, or software otherwise not suited to being distributed with
Ubuntu.

In Ubuntu you can click System - Administration - Software Sources

Enter your password when prompted

Click the Other Software tab and hit the Add... button.

Paste in:

ppa:qgis/stable

And click Add Source. Your PC will then download a list of software
available to you - this now includes QGIS. From the terminal you could
run:

sudo apt-get install qgis

or you could look for the app in the new Ubuntu Software Centre.

However... When I did the above my souftware sources refreshed and I was told:

Failed to fetch
http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/stable/ubuntu/dists/karmic/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
 404  Not Found

Looking at the server it seems that karmic is missing:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/stable/ubuntu/dists/

So yes, back to your original question, can the 9.04 sources be used
instead? Sorry, I don't know the answer to that one.

Cheers, Joseph

Thankyou,
I added ppa:qgis/stable to the second page of the Synaptic Software source dialog box and it was automagically rewritten into
http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/stable/ubuntu karmic main
(I dont know how, I only installed Ubuntu this morning)
then when I pressed on the Synaptic main window's reload button
things went smoothly for a while but after  loading about 54 files
I got an error message saying that not all index files could be loaded.
regards
Henri
