Installing an identd on DogFish

Hi,

Sorry if this is not of interest to many people, but we currently don't
have anywhere else to put this and discussion needs to be out in the
open (hopefully there will be a separate list for this soon).

Are there any objections to installing an identd on DogFish, several
members currently use it as an IRC client and this would help ensure
disruption would be minimal should a user be banned from a channel or
even a whole network?  Furthermore it is generally good practice on
multi-user systems.

Just press apt-get install identd or whatever it is.

I know perfectly well how to install an identd, but it is not any single
individuals place to make decisions.

I have no objections, it would be good to have it as then I guess it
would mean that if one person got banned whilst on the server the
other people who use it and who have not been banned could continue to
use IRC?  If that made any sense at all?

Good idea, thanks Robert.

Providing the person implementing the ban used the correct syntax, yes.
Even if they don't use the correct syntax then it lets us present a
solution to them if it affects another user.

What IS it?

But if it's todo with IRC, I can't see any particularly issues from my
point of view.

Presumably the teamdogfish alias could be used for disussion of this
nature.

I'll try and get a real mailing list setup though ASAP if it'd be helpful..

Tim

identd provides a way for external servers to identify which particular
user on DogFish is connecting to their server, so they don't have to
block the whole system.

Seems to be generally accepted, will implement.

Perhaps, but a lot of discussion might be relevant to both users and
roots.

I was thinking of just using dfey-general-discuss or whatever for it, as
the "core" members who it will be relevant to will be on it and people
just interested on happenings in their area won't.  But a mailing list
specifcally for DogFish would work well too I suppose.

There a few ideas with regards to this, but yes, I agree that it is
relevant to the users so is probably a good idea.
