I've written a guide on how to install plone from source on Mac OS X 10.5 Server/Client.
https://webdev.gseis.ucla.edu/documentation/installing-plone-v3.2-on-mac-os-x-10.5 I thought it might be useful in addition to the information posted at: http://plone.org/documentation/tutorial/hosting-mac Regards! |

After posting this, I learned that there will be some sort of user submitted documentation sub-section in the new roll out. Would this be better suited for that?

We'll take a look and see where this fits. Thanks for submitting!

I'm not sure if anyone else has responded to this, but I'd love to see this
get incorporated on plone.org. It looks like a pretty easy cut + paste job that would be easy for a newbie to do. Any way we could fit this into a TuneUp? Thanks, mosx! mosx86,
I wonder if you tried using the Unified Installer? If you've already got the X-Code tools installed, the Unified Installer (which is a source-code kit) will do all of this for you, with lots more options and a lot less pain. Just put both options in and give the pros and cons.

Steve,
I'm still relatively new to plone. My initial research and reading materials all pointed to using buildout as the pathway to production deployment. The documentation out there for the Mac platform is either based on macports or binary installer. I like as much control over my installations as possible, and have been burned by wysiwyg installers/admin tools in the past so in my mind, buildout was the way to go. I also found that installing the individual components to be helpful in understanding Plone more thoroughly and thought that some clean documentation that takes you through each step would be helpful to others using the Mac platform. I'm always open to ways to make my life easier though and will take another look at the Unified Installer. Regards!

Hi mosx86,
Thanks to the problems you've experienced in the past, SteveM has put a lot of effort into creating a binary installer that takes care of all of these dependencies and creates a working buildout for you. I would also like to know what the use case is for installing from source, since I'm documenting this for the upcoming theming book. I know we've covered the dependencies, I'm just not clear on when it's appropriate *not* to use the binary. - Veda On 3/31/09 9:26 AM, "mosx86" <[hidden email]> wrote: > > Steve, > > I'm still relatively new to plone. Hi mosx86,
We've got two installer solutions for OS X: 1) The specialized OS X installer. This is a binary installer with a standard Mac GUI installer. X-Code is not required. It lets you choose target location, single-instance or ZEO, and production or development. 2) The Unified Installer. This is a source install kit, and you must pre-install the X-Code tools on OS X. Basically, it's a batch of sources and an install script. It lets you choose target location, single-instance or ZEO, and production or development. If you wish, you may use a system Python 2.4 (I'd suggest using macports for that) and it will automatically use virtualenv to protect it. Both of these, and every other installer we ship, are buildout-based. All deliver a buildout-equipped installation. I'm not saying that you need to use them. I'm just suggesting that if you're writing a document on OS X installation, you might want to try one or both installers first to get a baseline. After taking some time to look at the unified installer in more detail, I can see how it's the way you'd want to go with documentation. I think it would still be useful to have something on how to do buildout without relying on the unified installer or binary installers, but perhaps that could exist as a generic *nix document (one that strictly uses autotools).
I think part of the problem might be that on the downloads page there is nothing that really differentiates between the binary installers and the unified installer (They are really two different concepts). And while many of us know that Mac OS X is UNIX at its core, I see no mention of it until I download the unified installer and read the README file. It suggests that the binary installer is the way to go on Mac OS X. Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Regards!

I think it's worth adding a "which installer do I want?" section to the
Products page...
