Mike in USB.  Went to preferences  and on device choose alsa samson
CO1U, On channels choose 2 stereo. Please advise as to proper
configuration.

If that's your device, the configuration sounds correct. You also need
to adjust recording sources and levels through your favorite mixer
program. like kmix in KDE. Universal is alsamixer -c <number of your
card> run in a console (xterm, konsole, gnome terminal).
