http://n2.nabble.com/Canyonlands-Sustainable-Solutions-f530457.html is a link to a page where our CSS posts are being forwarded
to a Nabble page, something I’m just learning about. It was pointed
out to me by Karl Larsen that someone was disparaging my character on the Times
Independent blog (see earlier emails). I’ve followed up on this,
due to the agitated nature of the writer of the posts, and find that the above
link was cut & pasted on the TI blog. Somehow, Someone signed up an
e-mail address which posts all our emails onto this site. This could have
only been done by the e-mail manager at the time. This particular page
was created by Franklin Seal on July 16, which you can see at the bottom of the
page. I’ve enjoyed interacting with all of you, but I’m
not interested in this type of subversion. I truly have wishes for a
loving, interactive community and wish you all the best as you move towards
this goal. I know that time will prove our common needs & goals will
have to come from communication and evolutionary behavior. Not
in-fighting and control issues. I will be continuing my efforts to stop the irresponsible
development in our City/County – and hope that you all realize the
un-sustainability of the ill-placed developments that are currently being
approved. Thanks for whatever activism you participate in. But didn't Julianne say that her emails had been doctored? Or was it just that it/they was /were cut and pasted and then there were some nasty responses on the TI blog? I am still not clear about what your complaint is, Julie - I guess because we were not able to read what it was that offended you??

understand Julie to say her e-mails themselves had been doctored. I understood that her motivation for her

The initial goal of CSS was to involve as many facets of
the community as possible in a discussion about how to better deal with rising
energy prices and resource shortages. Every aspect of the community, regardless
of political inclination, has something to offer. If CSS is to involve
the whole community, the members have to be very tactful about discussing
political differences. Internet forums are a terrible place to try and
understand and communicate with someone about political differences. It is my hope that CSS members will be open minded and
respectful in their posts, and, rather than emphasize political differences,
will try to look beyond that and find common ground in ways that anyone,
liberal or conservative, can work together to support sustainable ways of
living in hard times. There are so many things that could be easy common
ground. Let’s focus on those things and invite the whole community
in, check your politics at the door, and find ways to work together. Chris Baird From: [hidden email]

We'd like to announce the final workshops in the Sustainable Agriculture Series. We have had one request not to send the hunting info due to personal feelings about the issue, but since this is a list-serve, we are unable to control who it is sent to (sorry). Please delete this e-mail if you have no interest in hunting. First up: On Sunday November 2nd from 2 to 4 pm the Youth Garden Project and WabiSabi will sponsor a closer look at Castle Valley Creamery, the folks behind the fabulous goat cheese sold at the Moab Farmers’ Market. Erik Secrist will be on hand to answer all your questions about goat husbandry and cheese-making. The entire afternoon will be spent at the Creamery; to carpool from Moab, meet at YGP at 1:30 pm. Cost is $5; please RSVP to YGP at 259-BEAN (2326) or to [hidden email]. Second: On Saturday November 8 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Scott Anderson and Trish Hedin will lead a workshop on the basics of ethical hunting and butchering. Trish writes, “Fall is synonymous with hunting, a time when game is fattening up for winter and when locals are bringing in their protein for the season ahead. Local hunters and the Division of Wildlife Resources will introduce you to the basics of hunting and butchering. During the workshop, you'll be acquainted to the game species of Utah, hunting privileges within the state and how to go about getting a tag. We will introduce the various weapons that are used for hunting both mammals and birds, what weapons are appropriate, cost and an ethical range in which to hunt game animals. We will also bring in the basic concepts of game species that exist around Moab, their habitat, behavior patterns and what it takes to track a game animal. Lastly (for those that aren't ready for the butchering aspect, they can leave at this junction) we'll introduce butchering of game using a domesticated animal. The entire workshop will hinge on the concepts of ethical hunting (having a tag, shooting at an appropriate range, tracking and hunting during appropriate conditions, and avoiding waste during butchering). We believe that hunting is a key component to providing a sustainable community in correlation with providing healthy and sustainable game flocks and herds.” The workshop will be held at YGP; please RSVP to YGP at 259-BEAN (2326) or to [hidden email] by November 1st to reserve a spot. A minimum of 8 people are needed for the workshop to be held; please call or email today if you are interested. And then: Join us Saturday November 15th at 11am, TreeUtah, the Youth Garden Project and WabiSabi will sponsor a tree planting workshop. Learn the basics of proper planting, pruning, selection and care for trees here in Moab. We will plant five trees of various sizes during the workshop. Lunch will be provided and this workshop is FREE! To RSVP for the tree planting, please call 259-2326. A huge thanks to TreeUtah for providing the trees for this planting! Finally: There has been some interest expressed in a workshop on veganism. Sara Melnicoff writes that it was "for the animals [that], after 31 years as a vegetarian, I took the extra step of going vegan about 5 years ago. I feel so much better physically, emotionally, and spiritually." While the workshop series for 2008 is complete, if you are interested in attending (or teaching!) a workshop next year on eating vegan, please feel free to let me know by emailing [hidden email]. Thanks, everyone! Enjoy your fall, and please do RSVP if you'd like to participate in either of the upcoming workshops. Phrasing such as “To look beyond”
political differences is itself a bit disrespectful.” “Disregarding political
differences” is equally accurate, without implying that such disregard is
somehow morally superior to political involvement. But I do think that I’m beginning
to better understand what’s proposed for this group. If I understand it correctly, the idea
is to explore “sustainable” practices without paying any attention
to political activities that might help or hinder the execution of those
practices. In other words, exchange
ideas about farming in the valley, or rammed-earth construction, or solar
power, or other such ideas, without any discussion of political realities that
might make such things easier or more difficult - or virtually impossible - to
achieve on a wider scale, such things as, for example, the carrying capacity of
the valley. If that’s the purpose of the group,
fine. I’ll be interested to
see what passes back and forth, although I may not be able to contribute
much. I’m a lawyer by
training, so I don’t know much about farming, construction, etc. So I may not have much to say –
unless someone implies the moral superiority of disregarding the impact of governmental
and political realities. I’ve
worked too hard in that area, with too many good people – who’ve paid
too high a price for too long – to just let such comments pass without
response. Otherwise, I’ll probably be pretty
quiet. Mike Suarez From: The initial

In the spirit of the Moab Literary Confluence occurring this week: "Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul."
-Edward Abbey
Individual action implies and ultimately requires collective organizing. Collective action - common ground - implicates political activity. From chickens in the backyard, to tailings in the water and greenhouse
emissions in the air, to wars that perpetuate hatred, division, suffering, environmental devastation and diverted resources...
Thanks Mike, Chris, Julianne, and everyone else contributing and organizing.
