Hi all!

I work for the Barcelona Tech University (http://www.upc.edu), and we are moving our old-style 1.0 main web to a brand-new Plone based one. We also have a big installment of Plone sites (departamental web and intranets, university services, faculties, etc...) We almost finished the development/design but our bosses (mainly our big boss) is very concerned about the performance that the web will be able to deliver. They are asking me to survey the community in order to collect diferent experiences in high performance Plone sites. We are interested in bechmarks (no matter the nature of this) that anyone could have made over their installments.

Of course, we know the kind of system architecture we have to build on to achieve great results (Apache/Varnish, multiple ZopeClients, ZEO, etc...) but we lack of the knowledge of statistics about the performance of intense traffic Plone sites out there.

Maybe, after all, there will be an excelent execercise for all of us to do this!

Thanks in advance!

High performance or large-scale?
Both requirements may require different approaches.
Especially in the "university business" we often have to deal with
large-scale issues
(where high-performance is one aspect of the complete setup out of many
others).

Hi Andreas,
In fact, I was talking of both at the same time. Since our requirements are to be able to support a mid-scale number of requests per day (70.000 aprox, on peak days),

Such numbers are basically pointless. A Varnish setup can answer 10k requests/second serving your requests within seven
seconds...all numbers are tied to a particular setup fitting very special needs so such numbes must be treated with care.

Hi Andreas,
I know... the numbers I showed up are from our current web, an apache served, no cached static pages...

I know that the numbers that will show our brand new web will be completely untied to the old ones... diferent requests x page, diferent weights, diferent tech, but you know how bosses and especially university directors are... In their ignorance, they think that are tied.

Look, we have worked in the new web for 3 months, and they are questioning to have chose Plone for the web platform... and we didn't even put it in production.

I feel like I'm telling you the story of my life, sorry about that ;)  I know you from a bird of a feather session in the Naples Plone Conf 2008, so I know you work for universities as well.

I was only in search for that number that make ease my bosses... they only want to hear "The people from ____ have a Plone Site, and it performs ________ pages per day"

From what I know there are a number of universities
in Germany using Plone or Plone-based solutions for
their web presence like

Humboldt University Berlin
University Marburg
University Freiburg
Technical University Munich
Technical University Dresden

to name just a few (and where I would know some
of the people involved).

While I'm not aware of any statics or performance measures
available in public for those sites you might want to try
to approach the teams behind those sites.

Good luck,
