Firstly, I have to state that I am British and have spent many years attending football games around London and Liverpool. I know people around London, especially the East End (where West ham fans are born and bred) that are specifically soccer thugs or boozers (heavy weekend drinkers and gamblers).
When the original Green Street Hooligans was released I was living near San Francisco, USA. I watched the movie in a local theatre and was excited to see this movie. It fell short of what real life on a Saturday afternoon at West Ham is really like. Some poor acting and the main character kept losing him cockney accent and slipping back to his native northern UK tongue. This movie was released only a few years after the truimphant Football Factory directed by Nick Love with a real London cockney actor Danny Dyer.
The Football Factory is so much realistic that it reminds me so much of my youth and attending football matches. I kept watching the characters and saying to myself "I know people just like that". The GSH movie is more a Hollywood production of what Americans think football hooligans are. Sorry but they was not even close with GSH1...so why now are they spending more money on Green Street Hooligans 2?
I have only watched the trailer(see below) and to me looks like a Mean Machine (Vinne Jones) re-make. The big question I have is why are there British hooligans and British prison guards in a prison located in the USA? Who wrote this script and approved it?
I should hold judgement and go see this movie before writing anymore, but this looks worse than the first GSH movie. I am not sure if I can handle wasting a few hours of my life on a cheap sequel. So those of you who was expecting a review from me, please don't hold your breath. I'd rather watch Football Factory again for the 100th time. No wonder that it is being released straight to DVD in the USA.
If you do watch this movie then please leave your comments and let me know what I didn't miss.
Green Street Hooligans Plot(IMDB): Following the deadly climax of "Green Street Hooligans," several members of the West Ham firm and numerous members of Millwall end up in jail. The GSE quickly discover the brutality of life on the inside, as they are constant targets of the superior numbers and better-financed Millwall crew. Football on the inside and out is followed fervently by the prisoners and wins and losses by both are quickly followed by punishment or reward. This could mean a beating or an extra shower or a day of visitation, which inspires extreme behavior. When overcrowding compels a need for the early release of a fortunate few, fate brings West Ham and Millwall together again this time on a Pitch. The stakes are the highest they have ever been for all concerned with death or freedom quite literally a goal away. Game on.
