I have been thinking about the possible benefits of buying an upgrade to GSO 4 while one still can.  Especially, the compatibility with 64 Bit XP or Vista so that Hauptwerk and GSO could cohabitate peacefully on the same machine.   Concerns were stability and compatibility with 3.21 gig and gsp files, so I posted a query on the NorthernSounds forum.  Hollywoodjaxx replied:

"I would recommend it, absolutely...it's the best $175 you could spend on music right now. It is so much more stable than GS3 ever was and in 64 bit you can use it in a quad core machine with 8 gigs of ram...take the place of 2 1/2 to 3 Giga 3s. I've built a bunch of 'em and I get no complaints from owners what so ever.
You can load gsps from GS3 into GS4 but once saved can't go back so change names before saving of course. All the gig files work just fine.
I think there's an app on Tascam's website that's a fix for files getting screwed up in the transition, but I've never experienced it. I think if you leave files in their native *.gig you're okay. I know changing 1s and 2s to 3s caused a lot of problems and was totally unneccessary."

So would it be possible to run all the ranks of yours with say Neil Jensens HW ranks? I'm interested in that. Would there be a need for an additional PC or Mac machine? Really an exciting idea and apparently has worked for Hollywoodjaxx numerous times.

Don,

Yes, that's an intriguing idea.  In theory, Hautpwerk could be run as a VSTi inside of GSO4 and thereby have access to GigaPulse; however, it is a big IF whether or not that would actually work.

I have dipped my toe into the water regarding the possibility of collaborating with someone to create a freeware HVO for Hauptwerk.  I am willing to work on porting the samples (a very big job), but I would need for someone else to take on the ODF, also a major undertaking.

Ok,  but with GSO 3 operating within XP-32,  and you then upgrade that install to GSO 4,
how do you then get GSO 4 on the XP-64 disk?  Or can I just put GSO 3 directly
on XP-64 (even thought it will not operate on that OS) then upgrade that to
GSO ?  Explain please.  And must I call Tascam with any info about GSO 3
installation to get GSO 4 operating?

I have the Mac Pro with an HD devoted to XP-64 (via Apple's BootCamp for OS X).
I have yet to partition that disk in order to install XP-32 and GSO 3.

Thanks,  Jim

Hi Don,

I seriously doubt that this is possible.  It appears to be the 1010LT's GSIF drivers that are the issue.  Two to four 1010LT's will be recognized by Hauptwerk or other ASIO based sample players.

Jim,

Hollywodjaxx responded with this:

"I'm not a Mac expert, but as I said in the other post GS4 is a totally separate program not a patch or an upgrade (at least it is on the PC and I know the programs were developed in parallel). The "upgrade" was an acknowledgment from Tascams website that you were a registered owner of GS3 and were given an code to activate your syncrosoft key."

GSO4 comes with a registration dongle and as I recall, registration is quite simple when upgrading from GSO 3 on the same PC.

Ok,  Joe, and thank you for checking with the horse's mouth.

I understand,  GSSO4 is completely separated and NOT to be
installed over or on-top GSO3,  as is done with Hauptwerk,
for example,  where we download/install  V3.22 atop V 3.31.
G3 is only needed by Tascam for them to verify you do
own a registered copy if you have paid for same and pay
only the upgrade price for GSO4.

Presume now that HW 4.0 may be released by Milan  before
or on 8/1/09,  and if not then,  by 11/1/08 latest,  at
least per my reading of the tea leaves.
