GSM firmware flash bricked GTA02 GSM modem

I flashed my Calypso using the image from http://people.openmoko.org/joerg/calypso_moko_FW/moko11/

All went seemingly OK, as after a while the friendly green "DONE" showed up.

Since then however, I (nor my freerunner) have not been able to access the SIM anymore.

I tried repeating the flashing procedure, with the same result. Now I paid attention to the blue output as well, which showed I was trying to flash an identical firmware (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GSM/Flashing#Hints,
"In some case you may receive this:
  (fluid, version 3) ok
  Checksumming (269 * 8kB = 2152kB):  ok
  Flash Detect: (0xEC, 0x22A0) Samsung K5A3240CT ok
  Program: (0 sectors, 0*8k=0k) () ok
 "
)
My output's a bit different though: it says fluid, version 2.27.

I am a bit hesitant now to continue and follow the instructions for a manual firmware download, since this fluid business is so picky on the syntax.

Any advice on how to continue from here?

Best regards,

Boudewijn

Looks like you're using some obsolete kernel or software that doesn't
enable hardware flow control properly (which was fixed with moko11
firmware).

I suggest you to install the latest SHR unstable kernel and then to try this
command to communicate directly with the modem (ensure you have everything that
can access the modem turned off beforehand):

socat - file:/dev/ttySAC0,crtscts,crnl,echo=0,b115200
echo 1 > /sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/neo1973-pm-gsm.0/power_on

.29

Yes, you can check all terminal parameters with "stty -a" command.

I used jOERG's firmware-flashing distribution; socat was not recognized, but I could run the power_on which does not say so much in itself.

I also ran the manual check on the firmware flashing-page on the wiki. The results agreed with the outcome on the wiki.

Now I just flashed beta3 of hackable:1 v5. After fiddling with the interface for a while, I turned on and off the GSM a few times. On selecting auto register with network, I had a connection in a few seconds. Success!

stty-a gave a list of parameters, but I did not recognize anything that looked like hardware flow control; I will check again later.

For now I can make and receive phone calls; the rest can wait till the week end :-)

The moral is: you finally used distro that is not broken, just as i
suggested.
