Dear GRASS list,

I want to start using GRASS and am a bit unclear about which version I should install. I am currently running Windows XP 2002. Can someone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Install the 6.3 native windows version:

OK, apologies in advance for this trivial question.

I downloaded the WinGRASS-6.3.0-4-Setup.exe file and also the North
Carolina dataset. I completed the install, but when I click the
desktop shortcut or the icon from the program menu, a dialog box pops
up very quickly and nothing else happens. The box pops up so quick
that I can't read it but I assume that it is an error of some kind.

Additionally, the command line icon does the same but the MSYS console
seems to open.
Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks again,
Michael

I suppose you're running Windows XP or similar, but not Vista.
The error you're facing is probably due to a known bug in the installer
related to the username detenction.
Please, open a cmd session, change to C:\GRASS, type grass63 and enter.
Then tell me what messages you have as result.

Marco,
I assume you mean open the command line window. Which I have done, but
I am not sure how to change to  C:\GRASS.

I am running Windows XP, sorry I mentioned that in the earlier post.

OK the error is:

'Denslow' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
The system can not find the path specified.

Denslow is my last name by the way.

Ok. Could you please send me the content of your grass63.bat file? just copy
an paste it on a e-mail
Then:

1. where di you installed GRASS?
2. does your account name contain spaces?

Regards,

Marco

PS: now I'm quitting (tomorrow morning I'll leave on 5 AM for a conference),
and I don't know if I'll have internet access, so... do not expect other

I will send this is a separate email as not to send it to the entire
list. Thanks for having a look at it.

Ok. The grass63.bat file is correct. Maybe something goes wrong within the
.grassrc6 file.
Please try to delete the .grssrc6 file in your %userprofile% folder;
open cmd (from start panel), type: del %userprofile%\.grassrc6
then delete the same file in C:\GRASS\msys\home\"YOUR_USERNAME"

Finally start grass and tell me what does happen.

Marco

I was able to delete the .grssrc6 file from my user profile folder but
when went to delete it from the C:\GRASS\msys\home\"YOUR_USERNAME"
folder it was not there. This folder is empty.
When I tried to restart GRASS I got the same error message that
flashes up quickly on the scene.

Looking forward to further advice,
Michael

1) could you please find the grass63 file (not the .bat file) in you GRASS
installation? if it is not in C:\GRASS\msys\home\"YOUR_USERNAME" it should
be somewhere.
When found send me a copy (as attached).

2) does your account name contain spaces?

Cheers,

Marco

No. Move it to C:\GRASS\msys\home\"YOURUSERNAME"
The content of the file is OK. The problem may rely into the .grassrc6 file,
I suppose.

OK. But your username is "Michael" or "Michael Denslow"? (I suppose the
latter, because of the strange warning you detected)
This is what your .grassrc6 file should contain, just after the installation
of GRASS:

GISDBASE: C:/Documents and Settings/Michael Denslow/Documents/GIS DataBase
LOCATION_NAME: demolocation
MAPSET: PERMANENT
GRASS_GUI: tcltk

Regards,

Marco

the path name is actually:
C:/Documents and Settings/Katz&Denslow
I think this is what you mean by username.

Where is this file located? Didn't I delete it previously?
Also the GIS DataBase folder is located in the following path
C:\Documents and Settings\Katz&Denslow\My Documents\GIS DataBase

Is this a lost cause should I try to install GRASS 6.2.3?

OK. Finally we got it!
I believe that the "&" is the problem!

You'll always have 2 .grassrc6 files; one in C:\Documents and
Settings\Katz&Denslow\ and the 2nd in C:\GRASS\msys\home\Katz&Denslow\
Every time you delete one of the above, a new one will be created when
launching a new session of GRASS (respectively using the DOS shell/GUI and
the MSYS shell/GUI)

> Is this a lost cause should I try to install GRASS 6.2.3?

forget the GRASS 6.2.3 version for cygwin; we're just talking about the
windows native version.

To be sure, do as follow:
1) uninstall GRASS: Start->Programs->GRASS->Uninstall GRASS
2) change your username from Katz&Denslow to Katz And Denslow (or whaterver
you want, but without the "&" char)
3) reboot your machine (just to be sure)
4) install GRASS
5) e-mail me :)

Cheers,

Marco

Unfortunately, I am not sure one can easily modify the actual user
account in Windows XP. So I created a new account on my computer with
no special characters. And it works I am now running GRASS!

Thank you so much again,
Michael

Do you have any idea why?

Ideally, GRASS should handle any filename which is valid for the
current codepage (supporting Unicode filenames which use characters
outside of the current codepage probably isn't feasible, but that
isn't the issue here).

I believe that the problem relies at line 32 in the init.bat: if
"%HOME%"=="" set HOME=%USERPROFILE%

the & char is recognized as a command, so, if we set, for example: set
HOME=C:\Users\Marco&Glynn

we will have: 'Glynn' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file. The system can not find the path specified.

I think that we could fix it putting: set HOME="%USERPROFILE%"

but unfortunately I cannot test my solution now (too much things to do to
create a new & user and reboot the machine, I'm afraid!)

Regards,

Marco
