to save much time, you can use kbabel to autotranslate
a lot of the grasswxpy_XX.po files:

- start kbabel with your grasswxpy_XX.po file
  (eg:
         cd locale/po
         kbabel grasswxpy_es.po
  )
- Settings
     -> Configure dictionary
        -> Po auxiliary

- load grasstcl_XX.po file, OK
   ([x] ignore fuzzy entries)
- Tools
      -> Rough Translation

- Save, check, submit

... and you will see that many descriptions are
transferred.

Please try!

cheers
Markus

PS: If someone can tell us how to do that on command line
we could prepare most files.

well, at least half of the messages from menudata.py can be taken from
grassmods_*.po. The tooltips of menu items (in "Layer Manager"
statusbar displayed as "<module name> - <module description>) are
synchronized with original modules' description. Those message
shouldn't be translated twice.
