Hi

I often read a Becta mailing list frequented by child safety experts
about internet safety called "safetynet".
http://lists.becta.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/safetynet

I've been following the thread:
http://lists.becta.org.uk/pipermail/safetynet/2009-August/thread.html
that resulted from this email, I wonder what you all thought...

Had an interesting issue raised and would appreciate your views -

Child is teenager, has learning difficulties and is in a residential
school. At home he amuses himself for long periods watching cartoons on
YouTube. His parents want their child to have access to YouTube (and
other sites) in his bedroom (this would be mostly unsupervised) while at
school. There is no school network connectivity into the residential
area of the school. Parents want their child to have a 3G mobile network
dongle to allow access to the internet on a home provided laptop. This
would be unfiltered. The parents are clear that they want him to have
this access and are willing to sign any waiver absolving the school from
fault if anything happens to their child as result of having access to
an unfiltered internet stream while in residence. They claim that this
is what he has at home and that is what they want him to have at school.

I wonder if you have any comment.

He is watching cartoons,  what is wrong with that,  if you expect him to
be viewing porn, he probably will in order to live up to that level of
behaviour expectations.

This is like seeing a bunch of teenagers on a street corner and assuming
they are either going to verbally abuse you,  physically assault you or
both.

BTW if you know who vandalised idiot MP blears' car, Please give them a
well done message,  not that I condone it, but for making her reveal her
arrogant patronising attitude towards young people.

You tube has filters for nudity,  and terms of service, which is
enforced, mainly to stop copyrighted material on the site.

The internet is full of sites with a lot of really interesting content,
some is controversial, but that is the beauty of it,

Parent's word trumps all, Especially in specialist schools. I think the
parents know what is right for their own kid. Unless it is blocked by
some goverment legislation then they should follow the wishes of the
parents.
