Subject: Open Access Week at the Library

Dear Faculty,

Please join Carleton University Library in celebrating Open Access Week, October 19th- 23rd.  Hosted by Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and the International Development Resource Centre (IDRC), this event promises an informative week of programming on many aspects of Open Access, with guest speakers such as Michael Geist, Open Access advocate and professor, and Stephen Choi, editor of Open Medicine.  View the full schedule of events.

What is Open Access?

Open Access provides readers with barrier-free access to journal articles and digital information published on the Web.  Open Access publications are free of most copyright and licence restrictions and there is no fee for accessing, printing or downloading material.  Open Access promotes sharing and collaborating among researchers and may increase the visibility, dissemination and citation rates of published articles.

The Ottawa public library, last I checked (http://computersforcommunities.ca/en/blog/ottawa_public_libray_adopts_nonlinux_friendly_digital_media), provided DRM versions of some books non-accessbile to Linux users. Does Carleton ensure that all resources are avaialble cross platform?

Cheers
