Alan, I am a second generation rural carrier and have been a member of this Association forever. It's my belief that we need to merge with another Union to make our numbers larger and thus a larger bargaining unit. You may have heard this question from me at National. Do you believe that we would ever be able to achieve that and would it benefit us

Jay,
Depends on which Union we affiliate whit with, a really aggeresive one is the CWA, but they are also affiliated with the AFL/CIO, which I oppose on merit, but there may be reasons we should "contract":  out thier resources, if it benefitted our craft. I don't have enough info to make a truly informed call at this time. I'm just a State Prez, so I can't comment right now,
Sorry Alan

We hear this call to either link up with another union, or de-certify this one and start fresh, almost every year. The problem with linking up with another union is with whom? If we link with the, so called, stronger NALC, whose interests will they look to satisfy first? It would be foolhardy to give them access to our routes and expanded territory while they are stagnating and we are gaining in membership and territory served. If we go to an outside union, who is going to explain our system to them? We can't even explain it clearly to an arbitrator. If we de-certify and re- form, during the unprotected year of de-certification, we would be prey to all the other unions and PO management, and in the end, may just end up weaker than we already are. Reform is a slow process, but it must take place internally. Progress is being made.

Skiz, I think your thoughts are right on. The best Union to represent us is the NRLCA, we just need to make it stronger by any means possible.

agreed fellas....all we need to do is get them to support the one we got...
we just need to show that it can SUPPORT them in return....
interesting paradox indeed...
To err is human...to blame it on someone else shows management potential!
