Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

Hi!

Whilst I am keen to get into OSGEO and its technologies, I am finding it a bit difficult to locate basic maps for the UK, in the manner of basic outline maps that seem to be available to the US, Canada and Australia. Does anyone have a basic outline of Essex County UK with rivers in ESRI file format for free use in a Windows GUI such as Quantum GIS to get the app started, please?

Yours sincerely,

AJLewis

Hi Andrew,

the lack of basic, free to use maps in the UK has been the driving
force behind OpenStreetMap and the free geodata movement. Welcome to
the club.

You can download Shapefiles (ESRI format) for the UK from OpenStreetMap data at:
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/europe/united_kingdom

This is a zip containing a few different shapefiles: administrative
areas, coastlines, highways, natural features, points of interest and
water features (rivers canals etc). Worth a look.

You may, in addition be able to obtain some boundaries from the ONS,
free as in beer but likely to be under some form of crown copyright,
downloadable but delivered via CD.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Andrew,

As Tim says, the lack of freely available geodata is a big problem in the UK, and one that the local chapter is keen to rectify. We are in the process of compiling our own list of data, which you can find here: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Public_Geodata_for_the_UK, and globally OSGeo has a public geodata project, and it's homepage is here: http://www.osgeo.org/geodata. For what you're after I would concur with Tim and recommend the OpenStreetMap datasets.

All the best, and welcome to the community!

Jo

Yes, of course!

I will add a link to the CKAN Geo pages from OSGeo UK too.

Brilliant! It would also be great if anyone knows of any more datasets
that we could add - or has any suggestions for additional
functionality they'd like to see on CKAN!

Several of us at the OKF are regularly around on Tuesdays, which is
our 'collaboration day' if anyone would like to drop in on our IRC
channel! Details are at:
