Fixing OpenJPA 1.3.x compilation issues in JDK 1.6

Hi Pinaki,

I found your commit

I think fix the compilation issues in JDK 1.6. Is that the  case. Will
1.3.x compile with JDK 1.6 if I merge those changes to 1.3.x.
