Hi,
I teach Graphic Design at a community college and am working on my  sabbatical project that consists of developing podcasts/videocast for my online classes. My project also includes contacting college faculty who are using podcasts in their classes to learn if they find them to be a useful teaching tool.

If you are using podcasts and are willing to spend 2-3 minutes answering a few questions please contact me ([hidden email]).
I will be forever grateful :->

Hi there,

anyone of this list has ever succefully streamed live video to SL?
We plan a presentation for the university of applied scienses Kiel.
My assitent has problems with the connection of VLC and the stream
server.
If there is anyone, who might have done this before - as there is no
documentation
of this process on the net - please contact me at [hidden email]

Thanks,
Nadja.

You need something that will play in QuickTime, and to have QuickTIme
installed on your machine. There was some discussion a couple of weeks
ago on this list about settings in a PC that you might need to change
too, but it didn't really register more than it was there.

Depending on who you're showing it to and the like, you can actually
just host it on any server, but if you have access to a streaming
server it will run more smoothly and efficiently - streaming servers
being optimised for that sort of thing. The best way to check it runs
is to open QuickTime and run the movie direct from the URL, which on a
mac is in the file menu but must be there on a PC somewhere. If that
works, then the system should also work in SL.

There are a variety of prim-based boards using variants of XyText -- I know that Salazhar Stenvaag (on this list) has one for example -- as ever, check his avatar picks for a location though I think many of his products have moved to xstreetsl. While you're there, search under Brainboard for variants based on the more recent llDetectedTouchPos functionality: Dudeney Ge has a free one.

When I first came inworld I used a board by AngryBeth Shortbread which may still be available in the ICT Library. I vaguely recall her saying she might update it -- whether that's happened, I don't know. There may also be something in SLOODLE?

I am currently playing with the text and drawing tool Twiddla.com running on Shan Bright's commercial scrolling web browser (which I find rather frustrating in other ways). I haven't used it "for real" and furthermore I haven't tried the equation editor (though reuse of the clip art supplied seems to work based on just a couple of concurrent users). [NB as of today, I'm having a problem with getting Twiddla objects to appear at all -- they're there when I mouseover but they don't display -- it worked OK yesterday].

1. Anyway, I start Twiddla in an external browser (as with Etherpad, each session/room gets a unique URL), then chat the room URL to the browser.
2. For reasons I don't understand, it locks up initially (I see a play button in the centre of the screen). I then click on the web browser (you don't have to use Shan's by the way) and, if configured that way, it opens the internal browser and eventually the normal Twiddla page appears there.
3. I then set the media URL manually using the Send Current URL to Parcel button in the internal browser (you probably need some owner/manager-type rights to do that).
4. At that stage the page appears on the prim and a Paused message appears on the internal browser as you can only run one session per application so I close the internal browser.
5. If you run an external browser with the same URL, you can see your text and graphics appear there and on the web prim.
6. There is a comms window in Twiddla that I haven't been able to close for the inworld prim and hence you have to be a little careful where you draw.

I wonder whether a tutor at least could run the apps on separate screens? I have no idea how many connections Twiddla supports.

There would be a school, of course, that said "Why not just use Twiddla?" Conversely, I was at an interesting talk yesterday by ePredator Potato espousing the view that we need to get away from 2D when inworld.

Doubtless there are VWs where this is much more readily achieved.

Best wishes

Peter [SL: Graham Mills]

The short answer to your question is no, there is no nice whiteboard
tool in SL where you can write in real time.

There are plenty of clunky hacks, none of which works like you'd want.
(Imagine a chalkboard where the chalk disappears 1 minute after you
put it on the board, or a whiteboard where there's a 2-second delay
between when you write and when you see the mark appear...)

I'm hoping that the "LLMedia API" thing will make it possible to
create a proper whiteboard in Second Life. I heard that some OpenSim
people figured out a way to draw realtime there, by using an inworld
SVG rendering engine.

I've followed this topic for a long time. When I first came to SL, I
said that two things are needed for it to be a "normal" classroom
tool: voice and a real whiteboard. We got voice, now we need the
whiteboard.

Hi, Liz, it's true that I developed some samples of whiteboards and
chalkboards in SecondLife which have already been used by some
educators for organizing brainstorms and active and interactive
sessions.

While it is surely true that in SL it is quite difficult to have a
real satisfactorily solution, especially if you are not going to use
streaming which however is quite cumbersome to organize and to use
effectively, and quite expensive for many since it requires you to own
a parcel, be very clever in set up media streaming (especially if you
deeded the parcel to group which is quite common to reduce fees),
nevertheless I think that some of my solution can be interesting ((
with the only problem that they might use a certain amount of prims
)).

Here are some of the tools I developed which might be of interesting
for you (or other people):

* Chalkboard. https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1502539
or https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=790893
This board has two interesting things: it can be used with NON ENGLISH
fonts and allow people to contribute easily to a brainstorm just
clicking on the button left to a line and chatting their contribution
in chat. A video of its usage is available here:
http://blip.tv/file/1072942 to explain a bit how this is working.

* Wiki3D: while not being strictly a "board" it can be seen as a 3D
board, mindmapper tool you can use to handle brainstorm and foster
mutual cooperation. You can see it here:
https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1683737,
while a video on its usage you can find here:
http://dotsub.com/view/6db008ca-7871-459b-a465-f170093a8ca8.
The latter tool had been already presented as an addon to sloodle
during some meetings in August 2009, and probably needs to be
furtherly enhanced.

And many others a lot of which even not distributed through xstreetsl...

Note that I'm working hard to integrate these tools with moodle and
sloodle (I'm currently in the job of using my boards as viewers for
"lessons" and "playbooks" made in Moodle and accessible via sloodle
objects). I foresee its extreme usefulness also for directly
interacting with Moodle forums, blogs and wikis.

I also developed many versions that can be used as HUDs so to not use
the prims in the parcel, and have developed many customized versions
of these for free to people asking me via IM or email. After about 3
years in SL I understood that any tools in SL should be customized for
each specific need, and mostly people should be a bit trained to use
it (and to bear with their inevitable bugs and insufficiences)...

Actually I'M NOT considering this activity as a way to gain money in
SL, but just a way to help people in using Virtual Worlds at best ((
you can consider this for me a hobby, since I'm working during the day
as a professional programmer)). I'm trying to offer them as opensource
and fullpermissions products, so that people can better them if needed
(retaining the by-nc-sa license).

If you find that some of my products are given for a very limited
price (1 - 10 L$), this is just some kind of very limited tip you can
give me to help me in uploading textures for my classes in sl. If you
don't have L$ please IM me and I'm happy to give them free.

Contact me inworld for any further explanation.

greetings from Italy,
salahzar stenvaag

If you're familiar with LaTeX I have a viewer which is embarrassingly still in beta, but seems to work with no problems, which renders LaTeX maths equations from chat. You can take a copy from the Warwick University Maths sandbox (just right click take copy should work, I haven't checked for a few months....).

Best wishes,

Here at Dharma Drum Buddhist College in Taiwan, we have adapted Dr.
Wood's brilliant viewer to write Tibetan words in SL. The
possibilities of viewers of this type -- which use server-side PHP
scripts to produce LaTex formatted .png files -- are limited only to
what can be produced by LaTeX: foreign scripts, equations, diacritical
marks, charts, diagrams, etc.

See the Tibetan writer in its prototype form at my Tibetan classroom:
Catocala (171,115,623).

Cheers,
