Hi John
I hesitate to send images and videos to a list so I sent them to you directly.
However I will describe to the list what I have done beyond powerpoint.
I have still images of the following:
I have done a presentation on the Transit Of Mercury at the International Spaceflight Museum.
On their main screens I streamed in live video of the transit actually happening relayed from Exploratorium cameras on telescopes at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Arizona. I suplemented the video with powerpoint slides. I rezed a planet Mercury on stage with the best surface image available texturing the planet. Above the seated viewers in the theater I rezed a 3D orbit model of the orbit of mercury about a sun, the planet orbited with correct timing leaving behind a trail of particles to define the orbit. The model showed why transits are rare.
I did another presentation on the Mars Rovers at the International Spaceflight Museum. For this presentation I supplemented a powerpoint presentation with a 3D full scale model of the rover which I commissioned Blue Tsuki to build for me. As I talked about the rover I could direct people to observe the parts I was discussing on the 3D model.
On 9 October 2009 I did a presentation on the LCROSS impact on the moon in the Exploratorium amphitheater.
I streamed live video of a program about the event from the Great Lick telescope.
I commissioned a full scale model of the telescope and dome to be built by Emileigh Starbrook adjacent to the amphitheater.
There were no powerpoint slides.
In the middle of the amphitheater I constructed a 3D animated model of what NASA expected to happen during the impact. (In the sky above I made a full size model of the impacts creating the 25 m diameter. I also had full size models of the spacecraft donated to me by Geofrank Taurog.)
I have a short and a long quicktime video of the model of the impact.
Those lecture aids are still present in the amphitheater and will be for at least a month.
In 2006 from Turkey and in 2008 from the Gobi desert I streamed live video coverage of a total solar eclipse into the Exploratorium amphitheater. I did not accompany these with lectures, however I made a personal self paced set of exhibits to guide people to an understanding of eclipses in the Exploratorium sim.

Such a great list...
Anyway, might anyone recommend a video, or other demonstration, of
using SL's features in a lecture format. I am really interested in
those that go beyond the PowerPoint type slide show, but perhaps not
as far as taking people on a tour of a sim (as that can be hard to do
with large groups of new folks.)
If there is no such demo, then maybe I'll ask for some cool
presentation ideas and come up with something myself ;-)
Thanks,
John
