Hello,

I wonder whether anyone here ever tried to build a static binary
of ovaldi in order to avoid using system .so's like glibc.
Seems xalan and xerces pose problems?

All the best

We have not tried to build a static version of the OVAL Interpreter in
several years. If I remember correctly xerces and xalan issues
contributed to us going the current direction. I would be curious to
know if you get it working.

Will do.

Just curious: does it mean that it is not really regarded a serious problem
to run ovaldi with dynamically system libraries?

Best

Jan,

Thanks for the emails regarding dynamic linking with the OVALDI.  As
Jon has stated, compiling the OVALDI application statically has hit
some snags in the past when compiling it against the XML processing
libraries, but this doesn't mean that it can't be done.  We haven't
really considered it a big problem to dynamically link the OVALDI
application against system libraries even though we acknowledge the
problems that arise when linking against a "compromised" glibc or
libstdc++ library.  Also, it was felt that the OVALDI was a reference
implementation and not a commercial tool, so the risks of dynamic
linking didn't really apply.

Again, this doesn't mean that we don't want this to be done--it would
be great if you were to produce a static build of the OVALDI.  I,
myself, am curious to see how large of a binary a complete, static
build will produce.  Also, I have read that statically building
applications with glibc have been notoriously problematic, so if you
venture down this road (or anybody else) I hope it goes smoothly.

Thanks,
Bryan Worrell
