While listening to audio, I create a label (ctrl+m) when I hear the
start of a segement which
needs editing and also create a label at the end (ctrl+m).

Now during editing what I want to do is double click between the labels,
and have the audio
selected so that when i press 'c', I can get a preview of the cut which
I want to make.

However, when I double click between the labels, only the label track is
selected, and the selection
is from the beginning of the label track to the ending label.

If I click on the label, the label name has focus and what I type
becomes part of the name (eg spacebar,
which I would like to press to start audio playback at the label position).

Label names are not so important; they could be given default
(increasing) numbers. However
selecting the audio at and between labels is important for the work we do.

Is there any way to do this?

(I am using Audacity 1.3.4-beta from CVS.)
Thanks for your help,
Dan.

Currently you can't create a selection between labels automatically as
far as I know.

As you may know, you can click in the audio track then SHIFT + CLICK
at a second point to create a selection between those points. So you
could click in the label then SHIFT + CLICK in the audio track above the
point marking the label point. It should be accurate enough given the
inevitable error in placing a label during playback, and in fact if you
click close enough to the exact point, the selection will actually snap
accurately to the labels (you'll see the yellow vertical lines
indicating this). SHIFT + CLICK in the label itself won't work, though
I'd argue it should.

You can also draw a selection during playback and then CTRL + M will
label the selection.

This can't really be avoided as some people would want to add a space
in their label name. You can use up arrow to shift focus to the audio
track then unmodified hotkeys like spacebar to start/stop playback will
work. Use down arrow to shift focus back to the label to continue
typing. Of course when you have finished typing, hitting ENTER to
confirm the label will let you use spacebar to play.
