Unicode is a character set that encompasses around 100,000 characters
including non-English language text characters and large numbers of
symbols:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnicodeUnicode versions of Audacity Beta will display Unicode characters in
labels and track names, and will display the program interface in
languages that use Unicode characters if fonts for those languages
are installed. On Windows, Unicode versions of Audacity require
Windows 2000 and later.
Non-Unicode versions of Audacity (including all 1.2.x versions) fully
support only the original ASCII set of 128 English alphabet characters.
There is also an extended ASCII 255-character set which includes
simple accented characters like e's and a's with acute inflections:

able to see the characters.
However, non-Unicode Audacity will on Windows 2000 and later support
the extended set of ASCII characters in track names (but not in labels). It
will also display in languages like Russian that use Unicode characters by
setting the Windows language options to allow this. On Mac,
non-Unicode Audacity will not support the extended set of ASCII
characters in either track names or labels.
