Hello again,

It looks like the format of the last calendar event was such that about half of the responses end up getting sent to the list as a whole. To cut down on the chatter, I have attached an iCalendar that should fix the problem. If you wish to respond, please respond using the attached iCalendar instead of my original message.

Sorry about this.

RE: Developer meeting II - Wednesday, Oct 7 @3:00 ET

Currently, the mailing list is addressed to (at least in the public “To:” line) “Multiple recipients of list”.  Which is good in that it hides email address of all the recipients.  But, makes it a bit more difficult to sort visually in the inbox to find THIS list entries when actively looking for them.  There are other mailing lists which are addressed the same way, thus making it even more difficult to find the one I’m looking for at any given time.

Would the mailing list owners/moderators consider a change that will clearly identify this mailing list as a natural part of the subject line?  Such as “[xccdf-dev_nist.gov]” would be very distinctive and facilitate the visual (and outlook rule setting) sorting.

FWIW .... and normally I would have sent this just to Joe, but since his reply address is unavailable ...  :-)

After more than half a decade of running a mailing list server, for tens of thousands of members and hundreds to thousands of mailing lists, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that obscuring the sending address, or automatically replacing the From address with the list Reply address, is generally unwise.   The miniscule extra thought/intent on the part of posters having to "reply all", when they wish their response to be seen by the list, pales in comparison to the oddities which arise when the sender address is obscured.

This has been shown to be true even when some particular vendor's self-serving ideas about how RFC 822/2822 email addresses might be manipulated in internal proprietary calendaring functions (Exchange/Outlook) are not routinely exposed to the rest of the world, but certainly when that does occur -- as demonstrated here.  :-)

Hello all,

It seems that not only are about half the mail clients resending meeting responses to the whole list, but about half of the resent messages cause Outlook to hang when viewed.

The meeting for Wednesday is still on, but ****PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THE INVITE****.

I apologize for precipitating this mess and will utilize different technologies in the future.

Charles

I used my iPhone (configured for Exchange ActiveSync with NASA MS
Exchange) to accept the invitation. I did not see my response pollute
the list.

Thank you, Richard.

I didn't mean to confuse the issue.  The meat of my suggestion is to recommend a fundamental change that identifies the name of the mailing list as the lead part of the subject line.
